Benedict Cumberbatch is a worldwide star, known for his diverse roles that showcase his incredible talent. He’s most famous for portraying a modern Sherlock Holmes in Sherlock and the iconic Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Cumberbatch recently appeared at Tokyo Comic-Con, where he sat down for an interview with tvgroove. During the conversation, he shared exciting insights about his life, career, and—most importantly for MCU fans—the future of Doctor Strange.
The interview was originally published in Japanese, and we’ve translated it for you. Apologies for any translation errors, and you can compare it with the original if you’re familiar with the language.
The interview covers various aspects of Cumberbatch’s life and career. Here, we’ll focus on the questions related to his work, Marvel, and Doctor Strange:
I’m sure there will be a lot of Doctor Strange fans here this time too. I think we can see changes in Strange, both as a hero and as a person, from his first appearance to the latest film. What are your thoughts on the character Doctor Strange and his changes and growth as a person you have played in multiple films?
Cumberbatch: That’s a good question. He certainly continues to change. At the same time, he is also constantly facing the same problem. The problem of what you sacrifice for the power you have. His powers are not given to him by special spiders or nanotechnology, but by extremely dangerous demons, gods, and other dimensions.
As a person, I think he is in the process of growing. I think he is currently learning to act for others, to work together as a team, and to trust others. He is a very complex and interesting character.
He started out as a very arrogant character, and was involved in godly deeds as a genius neurosurgeon, but now he is involved in godly deeds as a magician. He is growing, but he still has a lot of psychological issues that he is still trying to resolve.

In addition, he shared some of his future plans:
Mads Mikkelsen, who played Kaecilius in Doctor Strange, came to Tokyo Comic Con this time. Did you have any interactions with him?
Cumberbatch: Yes, I was able to talk to Mads a little! It’s always fun to interact with him. But this time, it was announced that Josh Brolin, a great actor, would also be coming. I’m sad that he couldn’t come.
[The celebrities coming to Japan] all flew in from different countries, and they were jet-lagged and tired, so it was hard to have a chance to interact with everyone, but when I came to Japan last year, I was able to go to a really delicious teriyaki restaurant with Tom Hiddleston. I had a lot of fun spending time with him.
And finally:
The American comic fans who are here this time must be excited about the future of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). Do you have anything to say to the MCU fans who are looking forward to the future?
Cumberbatch: I’m really excited not only to work with the Russo brothers again, but also to have Robert Downey Jr. returning as Doctor Doom. I think there’s going to be some really cool developments ahead, and I’m excited to see what happens next.
