Ridley Scott’s plans to team up with Paul Mescal again might be delayed because of the Beatles.

During a chat with Christopher Nolan after a screening of Scott’s latest film, Gladiator II, at the Directors Guild of America in Los Angeles on Tuesday, Scott shared that his next project will be the thriller The Dog Stars.

When Nolan asked if Mescal was going to star in it, as recently reported, Scott initially said yes but then corrected himself. He explained that Mescal’s schedule might get in the way, as the actor is set to appear in Sony Pictures’ Beatles movies directed by Sam Mendes.

“Yes,” Scott said in response to the question about whether Mescal would star in The Dog Stars. Maybe. Paul is actually stacked up, doing the Beatles next. So I may have to let him go.”

Although the studio hasn’t confirmed it, Paul Mescal is rumored to be the top pick to play Paul McCartney in Sam Mendes’ upcoming series of four biopics about the Beatles. Each movie will hit theaters and focus on one of the band’s four key members: McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight last month, Paul Mescal was asked about the rumors of him playing Paul McCartney. “It would be an incredible story to be part of,” Mescal said, keeping things vague. “With Sam Mendes directing, it would truly be a dream come true.” When pressed further on whether he would be taking on the role, Mescal shut it down, saying, “No, no, no — we’re not going there.”

Also last month, Beatles drummer Ringo Starr told Entertainment Tonight that Barry Keoghan would be playing him in the films and mentioned that Keoghan has been learning to play the drums. There are also rumors that Joseph Quinn is being considered for a role.
