‘Deadpool’ Star Ryan Reynolds Receives Order of Canada Honor: “Canada, you’ve given me more than I could ever repay”

Ryan Reynolds, the beloved Vancouver-born actor best known for his role as Deadpool, has been named an Officer of the Order of Canada, the country’s highest civilian honor. This recognition shows his Hollywood success and his exceptional contributions to Canadian communities through philanthropy and advocacy.

Reynolds captured the fans worldwide as Wade Wilson in Marvel’s ‘Deadpool,’ back in 2016 (although he kinda broke into stardom with ‘Green Lantern back in 2011) Beyond his on-screen charisma, he’s equally known for his off-screen efforts.

The Order of Canada citation specifically acknowledges his work with charities such as Water First Education, Covenant House Vancouver, and the SickKids Foundation. Additionally, he and his wife, Blake Lively, launched the Group Effort Initiative, an effort to create opportunities for underrepresented groups in the entertainment industry.

In response to the honor, Reynolds has often expressed his deep connection to his Canadian roots. During a past interview earlier this year, Ryan reflected on how the values he learned growing up in Canada have shaped him throughout his life. He also described receiving these national accolades as both surreal and humbling.

Reynolds’ charitable work doesn’t stop at Canadian causes. In recent years, he pledged significant donations to address global crises, including a $1 million matching contribution for Ukraine relief efforts and a $500,000 donation to tackle the Indigenous water crisis. Most recently, he and Lively committed to matching up to $500,000 in donations to the SickKids Foundation.

The Order of Canada is awarded to individuals who have made extraordinary and sustained contributions to society. Governor General Mary Simon, who oversees these appointments, emphasized how recipients broaden possibilities and inspire others. This year, Reynolds was among 88 honorees, joining a distinguished group that includes authors, musicians, and other influential Canadians.

Although Reynolds is widely recognized for his portrayal of the Merc with the Mouth, it’s clear that his real-life actions are actually even more impactful and meaningful.

The actor quickly jumped on X to share his reaction to getting the honor. “Canada, you’ve given me more than I could ever repay. Thank you for this incredible honor—I promise to use my powers for good… and general whimsy,” Ryan shared:
