Lionsgate is bringing a new psychological thriller to theaters just in time for Christmas 2025. The Housemaid, based on Freida McFadden’s best-selling novel, is set to release on December 25, and it’s already generating serious hype for its stellar cast and interesting storyline.
Sydney Sweeney takes on the role of Millie, a struggling young woman who becomes a housemaid for a wealthy couple, Nina (played by Amanda Seyfried) and Andrew. However, what starts as a fresh start for Millie quickly unravels as she discovers that her employers are hiding dangerous secrets. Michele Morrone (365 Days) also joins the cast in an undisclosed role.
The film is directed by Paul Feig (A Simple Favor, Bridesmaids), with a script adapted by Rebecca Sonnenshine. Feig, along with Todd Lieberman, Laura Fischer, and Carly Kleinbart Elter, is producing the movie, while Sweeney, Seyfried, McFadden, and Alex Young serve as executive producers.
Lionsgate is positioning The Housemaid as counterprogramming to big holiday releases like James Cameron’s highly anticipated Avatar: Fire & Ash and Paramount’s The SpongeBob Movie: Search for Squarepants, both set to hit theaters earlier that same week. Despite the competition, Lionsgate is confident that The Housemaid will attract female audiences looking for a thrilling, character-driven story.
Freida McFadden’s novel, first published in 2022, quickly became a No. 1 New York Times bestseller, selling over a million copies and spawning several sequels, including The Housemaid’s Secret.
Lionsgate Motion Picture Group co-president Erin Westerman expressed excitement about the cast, calling Sweeney and Seyfried “perfect” for their roles, highlighting their ability to portray layered and mysterious characters.
With Feig at the helm and a proven cast, Lionsgate is betting on The Housemaid to make a strong impression during the competitive holiday season. The film promises to deliver the same suspense and intrigue that made the book a hit with readers worldwide.
