‘The Marvels’ was a box office flop with few redeeming qualities, but it did lay the groundwork for introducing one of the most important future MCU teams: the Young Avengers.
Soon following the release of the movie speculations appeared that Marvel Studios is developing a project focusing on the team. The project currently doesn’t have a set release date or production start, and it was even reportedly rebranded as “Champions” a few months ago.
Now industry insider Daniel Richtman claims that the movie (or show according to some reports) is set to start production in 2026 so it will arrive after ‘Secret Wars.’
This makes sense considering all those reports that ‘Secret Wars’ will serve as a sort of reboot of the MCU, and Young Avengers, or rather Champions are set to inherit the mantle of the universe’s premier team.
Marvel apparently rebranded the Young Avengers due to concerns about the cast no longer fitting the “young” label and to broaden the team’s appeal. The change is also influenced by the box office failure of ‘The Marvels,’ leading Marvel to rethink its approach to younger heroes and team-ups. Although production for ‘Champions’ hasn’t started, Marvel is reportedly searching for a showrunner.
