‘Squid Game’ is a South Korean thriller series on Netflix about 456 financially struggling players risking their lives in deadly games for a huge cash prize. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk based the idea on his own struggles and class inequality in South Korea, but Netflix only picked it up in 2019.
The first season premiered in September 2021, becoming Netflix’s most-watched show and winning major awards. Season 2 was released in December 2024, with the final season set to debut in 2025.
‘Squid Game’ Season 2 has become a huge hit on Netflix since its release. In its first full week, from December 30 to January 5, it gained 58.2 million views, holding the top spot as the most-watched title of the week.
This made it the second most-watched non-English title of all time, just behind Season 1. Adding to the 68 million views it received in the first three days, Season 2 has now reached 126.2 million views in just 11 days. It is now the fourth most-streamed series on Netflix, behind ‘Wednesday’ and ‘Stranger Things 4.’
The season could soon surpass Season 1 as Netflix’s most-watched title. It has 78 days to reach 139 million more views to take the top spot.
In December 2021, Hwang mentioned he was talking to Netflix about a third season of the show. The third season was confirmed as the final season on August 1, 2024, with a premiere set for 2025. Hwang views this season as the conclusion of the story, feeling it will cover everything he wanted to tell, especially from the perspective of Seong Gi-hun, and doesn’t believe any more stories are needed.
Recently, Netflix accidentally leaked that the final season will be released on June 27 in a video the official channel posted to YouTube. The video has since been removed.
