‘The Queen Who Crowns’ is a South Korean drama starring Cha Joo-young as Queen Wongyeong and Lee Hyun-wook as her husband, King Taejong. The series follows the Queen’s journey as the daughter of a noble family and her relationship with the King during the Joseon era.
Supporting characters include Chae-ryeong, a servant turned mistress, and Yeong-sil, a concubine carrying the King’s child. The show premiered on January 6th with first two episodes, and even though it’s rooted in real history and based on real characters, it’s highly dramatized and offers a more detailed retelling of the classic story.
Episode 1 of ‘The Queen Who Crowns’ shows Queen Wongyeong’s coronation alongside King Taejong, highlighting their complex dynamic and Wongyeong’s role in his rise to power. Tensions arise with political challenges, family conflicts, and Taejong’s paranoia about his reign. The episode ends with betrayals and heartbreak as Taejong’s actions deeply hurt Wongyeong, setting the stage for more drama in the series.
Episode 2 sees tensions rise as Queen Wongyeong navigates palace conflicts and manipulations. Chae-ryeong feels abandoned and strikes a dangerous bargain with King Taejong.
Meanwhile, Taejong’s strained ties with his father escalate, leading to a temple ceremony with ominous undertones. The episode ends on a suspenseful note as Taejo unveils a weapon, ready to attack Taejong, leaving Wongyeong desperate to intervene.
One of the most interesting scenes in the show was definitely a highly NSWF scene that sees Cha Joo Young baring her chest:
What’s interesting is, due to these explicit scenes ‘The Queen Who Crowns’ has two versions: a 19+ version on TVING and a 15+ version on tvN. TVING releases two episodes every Monday for a total of 14, while tvN airs one episode every Monday and Tuesday for a total of 12.
The first episode debuted with impressive ratings, hitting a 5.9% peak in Seoul and a nationwide high of 5.7%, leading its time slot across cable and general channels.
