Donnie Yen has confirmed that a spinoff based on his character, Caine, from John Wick: Chapter 4 is in active discussions, with the possibility of Yen not only reprising his role but also stepping into the director’s chair. Yen expressed enthusiasm for the project while also acknowledging the responsibility of maintaining the franchise’s high standards.

Yen revealed that both fans and the studio are eager for the Caine spinoff. However, he emphasized the need to approach the project carefully, saying, “I try to do my best to bring something fresh to the franchise. I don’t want to bring down the expectations for the fans.”

Director Chad Stahelski, who has helmed all four John Wick films, has voiced support for Yen directing the project. Stahelski’s endorsement aligns with Yen’s extensive background in action cinema, both in front of and behind the camera. Yen has directed several films, including 1997’s Legend of the Wolf and the upcoming The Prosecutor, showcasing his ability to craft dynamic action sequences.

The Prosecutor, set to release on January 10, 2025, is a legal thriller inspired by a real case in Hong Kong. It follows a former detective turned prosecutor as he fights to uncover the truth behind a young man’s wrongful drug trafficking charge. Speaking about this project, Yen described it as a testament to his dedication, noting that he spent an entire year focusing solely on its production.

The Caine spinoff, still in development, is reportedly aiming to begin filming in 2025, possibly in Hong Kong. Yen has hinted at ideas for the storyline but refrained from sharing details, stating, “I don’t want to give away too much because I don’t know if I’m in that position to give that away.”

Fans of the John Wick universe are also anticipating other projects, including the Ballerina spinoff starring Ana de Armas. With the franchise expanding in multiple directions, the potential for Yen’s Caine to take center stage is exciting. As Yen said, “My attempt is to try to make something that won’t disappoint the fans and the general audience.”

Whether or not Yen directs, it’s clear he is deeply invested in ensuring the spinoff honors the legacy of the John Wick series while exploring new territory.
