Anthony Mackie Thought He Was Getting Killed Off in ‘Avengers: Endgame’—Until Chris Evans Dropped the Surprise of His Life

Less than a month stands between us and the release of ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ the movie will be Anthony Mackie’s first movie outing as Captain America, following his role as Falcon. Mackie played aka Falcon, in several MCU movies, starting with ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ (2014) and continuing in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ (2015), ‘Captain America: Civil War’ (2016), ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ (2018), and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ (2019).

Now in his latest interview with Fandango Mackie revealed that he believed that his character was getting killed off in ‘Endgame.’

Chris Evans surprised him by revealing he would become the next Captain America. Mackie, feeling nervous about being written off, was shocked when Evans handed him the script and said, “because you’re fucking Captain America.”

He goes, ‘have you read the new script?’ I said ‘no’ … he said, ‘you don’t know?’ Being black, I’m like, ‘I’mma die… damn. They’re getting rid of me man! He takes me to his basement … and goes ‘read it. I get to the part, he hands him the shield … I’m like, ‘so why did you give me the shield? He’s like, ‘because you’re fucking Captain America’

Evans retired his Captain America when he decided to stay in the alternate timeline with Peggy Carter, living out his life on his own terms. A much older Steve Rogers can be seen in the ‘Endgame’ handing Wilson the shield and the mantle.

In ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ Mackie is officially carrying the mantle. The fact that Falcon takes over the Shield is comic-accurate, a large portion of fandom was disappointed as they expected Bucky to become the next Captain America.

But, things are further complicated with the latest news that Evans will appear in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ with the majority of rumors claiming he is going to play Nomad or some other variant of Captain America.
