There Were Ideas of Having a Younger Jessica Jones Being Peter’s Best Friend in ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man brings plenty of Marvel characters into the mix, but it almost includes even more. Showrunner Jeff Trammell recently spoke about the show and revealed that one major character swap was considered early on—Jessica Jones instead of Nico Minoru.
Trammell shared that his team initially debated using a younger version of Jessica Jones in Nico’s place. While he didn’t confirm many details, he explained that the creative process involved selecting characters that best fit the story they wanted to tell.
“We knew we were going to do something different,” Trammell said. “For this story, we needed certain characters to fit these roles. And for me, I love Nico. I love Runaways. This is very much like an amalgamation of just characters I love that I would love to interact with Spider-Man.”
He went on to mention that along with Nico, other characters like Jeanne Foucault and Amadeus Cho were brought in to add more depth and variety. “Hopefully, this opens them up for even more audiences to go become fans of those characters in the comics,” he added.
The idea of a de-aged Jessica Jones would have created an entirely different dynamic for the show. While she shares some of Nico’s darker, brooding traits, her backstory and personality would have led the story down a different path.
There’s also the question of how this would have affected the larger Marvel landscape, especially since Krysten Ritter’s live-action portrayal remains a fan favorite. With Marvel being cautious about how it handles characters from The Defenders, it’s not surprising that they ultimately chose a different direction.
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man premieres on Wednesday, January 29, on Disney+. Episodes will be released in batches (2, 3, 3, 2), with the final two airing on February 19.
