Karla Sofía Gascón Apologizes for Past Racist, Islamophobic & Homophobic Posts: “I know this suffering all too well”

Karla Sofía Gascón, star of ‘Emilia Pérez,’ has apologized after old social media posts resurfaced, showing racist and Islamophobic remarks. The posts, shared on X, caused backlash.

Writer Sarah Hagi shared 12 examples of Gascón’s past posts, including offensive language about Islam. Some of these tweets remained online in the morning of Jan. 30, but many were deleted by midday. Gascón’s representatives have not yet responded to requests for comment.

People on X have also pointed out that Karla Sofía Gascón previously criticized the Oscars. In a post about the 2021 ceremony, she questioned whether she was watching an “Afro-Korean festival, a Black Lives Matter demonstration, or the 8M. That year, several Black and Korean actors won major awards, including Daniel Kaluuya for ‘Judas and the Black Messiah’ and Youn Yuh-jung for ‘Minari.’

Gascón’s latest post on X is an edited image showing two of her headshots placed over a row of green aliens. The text, translated from Google, says, “Karla Sofía Gascón is not an extraterrestrial.” It also humorously presents her as a representative of beings from Mars, claiming that “there is no water on Mars and that the atmosphere is unbreathable.

Karla Sofía Gascón apologized after fans discovered controversial tweets on her social media. She acknowledged the backlash, saying, “I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt.” She added that, as part of a marginalized community, she understands suffering and is sorry for the pain she caused. Gascón also expressed her hope for a better world, stating, “I believe light will always triumph over darkness.”
