Netflix Release Teaser for ‘The Eternaut’: A Chilling Alien Invasion in an Icy Apocalypse

‘The Eternaut’ (Spanish: El Eternauta) is an Argentine science fiction comic created by Héctor Germán Oesterheld, with illustrations by Francisco Solano López. It was first published in a magazine called Hora Cero Semanal between 1957 and 1959 as a serialized comic. The story follows a small group of survivors after a deadly alien invasion in Buenos Aires.

‘The Eternaut’ was supposed to be adapted to live-action several times in the last couple of decades but every time the project would be abandoned either due to copyright issues of the sheer cost of the project. In February 2020, it was announced that the comic would be made into a TV series for Netflix.

The show will be directed by Bruno Stagnaro and set in the present day. Ricardo Darín will play the lead role, with Carla Peterson, Marcelo Subiotto, César Troncoso, Andrea Pietra, and Ariel Staltari also in the cast.

In the series, a strange and deadly snowfall hits Buenos Aires one summer night, killing most people and leaving many others trapped.

The main character, Juan Salvo, and his friends struggle to survive. They soon learn that the snowstorm is just the first part of an alien invasion. The snow is radioactive, and it’s only the beginning of an attack on Earth. To survive, the characters must work together and fight, because no one can make it alone.

When the series was announced, Stagnaro shared an emotional statement with Netflix, saying, “My approach to the adaptation will be to be faithful to that child reader who looked at the story for the first time, trying to reconstruct the genuine emotion of living an adventure in the corner of the neighborhood and the construction of that great Argentine hero who is Juan Salvo.”

This reflects his commitment to capturing the same excitement and sense of adventure that readers felt when they first encountered ‘The Eternaut,’ while honoring the creation of Juan Salvo as a heroic figure in Argentine culture.
