The 2025 Academy Awards saw several notable actors and directors unexpectedly omitted from the nominations. Several big names were left out of the 2025 Oscar nominations despite strong performances. Nicole Kidman (Babygirl), Angelina Jolie (Maria), Selena Gomez (Emilia Pérez) and Daniel Craig (Queer) were all snubbed in acting categories. One more notable name that was absent from the list was Denzel Washington who was expected to receive a nomination for his role in Gladiator II
Washington joked about not being nominated for Gladiator II, acting like he was upset but clearly not taking it seriously. He sarcastically said, “Awww. Oh, I’m so upset,” to show that he wasn’t actually bothered. He then added that he’s happy for the actors who did get nominated and content with his own work.
“Are you kidding me? Awww. Oh, I’m so upset. I’m happy for all that did, and I’m happy with what I’m doing.”
Washington also explained that, at this point in his career, he doesn’t worry about awards or nominations. He said he’s been in the industry for a long time and, while he wouldn’t say he has “other fish to fry,” he acknowledges that priorities change with age.
He emphasized that wisdom comes from understanding, and for him, that means focusing on learning and listening more rather than talking. He finds this personal growth more exciting than any awards recognition.
“Listen, I’ve been around too long. I’ve got — I don’t wanna say other fish to fry, but there’s a reality at this age. The beginning of wisdom is understanding. I’m getting wiser, working on talking less and learning to understand more — and that’s exciting.
Even though the Academy didn’t nominate Denzel Washington, his performance as Macrinus in Gladiator II was recognized by other major awards, including the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards. He’s also no stranger to the Oscars, having won twice before—once for Glory and again for Training Day. Washington wasn’t the only one from Gladiator II left out, as the film received only one Oscar nomination for costume design.
