Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley, and Guy Pearce have officially joined the cast of The Dog Stars, Ridley Scott’s next film for 20th Century Studios. They will star alongside Jacob Elordi, who was cast earlier this year after Paul Mescal stepped away due to scheduling conflicts. Filming is set to begin in Italy at the end of April.

Based on Peter Heller’s 2012 novel, the movie takes place in a post-apocalyptic world after a deadly flu virus wipes out most of humanity. Elordi plays Hig, a pilot struggling to survive in this harsh new reality. He teams up with a hardened gunman, played by Brolin, as they navigate threats from roving scavengers. Along the way, Hig encounters Cima, a young doctor portrayed by Qualley, and her protective father, played by Pearce. The script was adapted by Mark L. Smith, known for The Revenant and the upcoming Twisters.

Scott, known for Gladiator, Alien, Blade Runner, and Thelma & Louise, has been on a roll in recent years, directing The Last Duel, House of Gucci, Napoleon, and the upcoming Gladiator II. This film reunites him with both Brolin, who previously worked with Scott on American Gangster, and Pearce, who appeared in Prometheus and Alien: Covenant.

Brolin, fresh off Dune: Part Two, is set to appear in the next Knives Out movie, Wake Up Dead Man, as well as Edgar Wright’s remake of The Running Man. Qualley, who gained recognition in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, recently starred in the Oscar-nominated horror film The Substance. Pearce, currently nominated for an Academy Award for The Brutalist, continues to add to his impressive filmography.
