Zachary Levi Says His Support for Trump Was “Was More Important Than Saving My Career”

Zachary Levi recently opened up about his public support for Donald Trump, saying he felt “at peace” with the decision, despite knowing it could impact his acting career. The “Shazam” star made these remarks during an appearance on “The Megyn Kelly Show” while promoting his new film, “The Unbreakable Boy.”
Levi initially endorsed Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for president but shifted his support to Trump once he became the Republican nominee. He spoke at a rally in Michigan, introducing a discussion between Kennedy and former Representative Tulsi Gabbard. During the interview with Kelly, Levi explained why he chose to be open about his political stance, despite the risks involved.
“I felt peace because I knew that this was more important than saving my career,” Levi said. “I think we too often fall into these paradigms, these thought processes of self-preservation, and it is not good. We need to be wise and we want to survive and we want to live and flourish and all those things, but we can’t merely make decisions off of, ‘Well I hope nothing bad happens to me.’ You got to sacrifice.”
Levi acknowledged he had thought and prayed a lot before making his decision, recognizing that his career could suffer as a result. However, he believed speaking out was more important. “What am I really afraid of at the end of the day? That I’m somehow going to lose jobs in an industry that I already believe is completely falling apart and that won’t even be creating jobs for me in a few years anyway? Like, come on. If I lose all of my acting career, and I hope I don’t, and so far I haven’t… But none of that matters. If the world goes off a cliff, what does it matter?”
He also defended Trump’s presidency, saying, “At least the guy’s doing what he said he was going to do. And more than that, these are some of the things I was kind of even secretly hoping he was going to do because, damn it, we do deserve to know what’s going on.”
After Levi’s endorsement, Whoopi Goldberg pushed back on his claim that Hollywood was overwhelmingly liberal. She argued that the industry has always leaned conservative in many ways and dismissed Levi’s concerns as exaggerated. In response, Levi posted an Instagram video clarifying that while there may have been more balance in Hollywood in the past, it is now difficult to be openly conservative unless an actor has already reached a certain level of success.
Levi also expressed concerns about the entertainment industry’s future, noting that the pandemic and the Hollywood strikes have already caused significant damage. He encouraged other Trump supporters in Hollywood to speak out, saying, “We’re getting eroded.
The pandemic and the strikes… they’ve already eroded it so much. My cry to all of you out there, you closeted Trump voters, it’s now or never. Do whatever you feel like you need to do. If you need to come out publicly and say it, if you feel like you still can’t, then don’t. I would never pressure you to do that. But know that if what you’re afraid of is somehow the backlash of an industry that’s not going to exist very soon, then don’t let that hold you back.”
He also spoke about the importance of transparency and accountability, questioning why people wouldn’t want to know what’s in their food, water, and medicine. He argued that elected officials should serve the public rather than dictate what is best for them.
Levi stars in “The Unbreakable Boy” alongside Meghann Fahy and Patricia Heaton. The film is set to be released in theaters on February 21 by Lionsgate.
