Spawn Creator Wants the Hero in Fortnite – But Epic Didn’t Bite!
Fans of Fortnite who are hoping to see the iconic comic book character Spawn in the game might soon get some good news. Todd McFarlane, the creator of Spawn, recently hinted that it could be time for him to push for a Spawn skin in Fortnite.
Since his debut in the 1990s, Spawn has gained a large following through comics, an animated show, and a 1997 live-action movie. Recently, McFarlane shared that he had actually approached Epic Games, the creators of Fortnite, about bringing Spawn into the game before. “Maybe it’s time for me to pick up the phone,” McFarlane said in a recent interview at MEGACON Orlando.
He explained that, during his earlier talks with Epic Games, the team was already in the middle of launching big collaborations with Marvel and DC, so they didn’t prioritize Spawn. McFarlane shared, “I had that conversation with them because I was making toys. I also have a toy company, and we’re making some of the Fortnite toys. So I was like, ‘Hey, you know, if you need any characters. I’m easy. I got like gobs of them. I’ll lend them to you.’ But I didn’t know. Behind closed doors, they were already just about to launch all that themselves.“
Despite Spawn’s popularity in other games like Mortal Kombat and Call of Duty, McFarlane believes that Fortnite’s wide range of collaborations with big names like Marvel and DC might have made it difficult for Spawn to stand out. He added, “To be completely honest, Spawn’s in a pecking order in terms of the average person knowing the word, right? My mom knows Superman, Batman, I don’t know that the average mom knows the word ‘Spawn.’“
McFarlane emphasized that getting Spawn in front of more people, especially through movies and TV shows, would help boost his recognition. “The way you do that again, as I said before, is, you have to get out, get it in front of people. And that’s usually TVs and movies. And then, at that point, the floodgates open up on all the other stuff,” he explained.
With Fortnite’s expanding list of characters and constant updates, McFarlane hinted that it might now be the perfect time to try again. “But the thing about once a company does something like Fortnite, and they’ve done all these cool characters, they start to go, ‘Well, who else can we do?’ So maybe it’s time, to your point, maybe it’s time for me to pick up the phone and remind them [Epic Games] that I’m still here off in the corner,” McFarlane said.
Could we soon see the Hellspawn himself join the Fortnite Battle Royale? Only time will tell. But with McFarlane ready to reach out again, the chances are looking better for fans who want to see Spawn in Fortnite.
