Lady Gaga Makes Fun of ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Poor Reception and Winning a Razzie Award: “Joke’s on them. I love winning things!”

Lady Gaga returned to Saturday Night Live on March 8, 2025, taking on both hosting and musical guest duties. It was her second time hosting the show, and she kicked things off with a monologue that blended humor with updates on her career. Gaga didn’t shy away from poking fun at some bumpy moments, including her acting journey and a controversial past performance.

The pop star looked back at her first hosting gig in 2013, when she was 27 years old. Now 38, she quipped about how time has flown. “Last time I hosted ‘SNL,’ I was 27. I’m 38 now, which is scientifically the best age for a female pop star to be,” she said. “Most pop stars are over 40. Chappell Roan is 58. And Charli xcx, she’s 75. Tate McRae is my biological grandmother.” The audience laughed as she set the tone for a night of self-aware comedy.

Gaga then brought up her 2013 duet with R. Kelly on SNL, a performance of “Do What U Want” that hasn’t aged well. R. Kelly was later convicted of racketeering and sex trafficking, and Gaga joked about it carefully. “I’m so happy to be back at ‘SNL.’ The last time I hosted was in 2013 and every aspect of my performance aged amazingly,” she said with a smirk. “So there’s no need to Google ‘SNL 2013, Lady Gaga featuring R. Kelly.’ I won’t bring it up, because that would be bad!” The line got a big reaction from the crowd.

Switching gears, Gaga talked about her shift to acting. She’s taken on roles in films like A Star Is Born and House of Gucci, which earned her praise. But her latest movie, Joker: Folie à Deux, didn’t fare so well.

The sequel, where she starred as Harleen “Lee” Quinzel alongside Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck, flopped at the box office. It made $206 million worldwide but cost $200 million to produce. Critics trashed it, and Gaga and Phoenix even picked up Golden Raspberry Awards—Razzies—for worst on-screen duo.

She leaned into the failure with humor. “Anyways, I’m an actor now. And I’ve been very diligent about selecting films that can showcase my craft as a serious actor, films such as ‘Joker 2,’” she said, pausing for effect. “Apparently people thought it was awesome.” The sarcastic delivery drew chuckles.

She went on: “Joaquin and I even got nominated for a Razzie, which is an award for the worst films of the year. We won for worst screen duo. But joke’s on them. I love winning things! And my Razzie brings me one step closer to an EGORT. It’s like an EGOT, but it’s hurtful.” The playful spin on the prestigious EGOT award—adding an “R” for Razzie—showed she wasn’t afraid to laugh at herself.

Gaga wrapped up her opening by setting expectations for the night. “So tonight I promise to act, to sing, and to not do Joker 3,” she said, putting any sequel rumors to rest with a grin. Later in the show, she performed tracks from her new album, Mayhem, which dropped on Friday. Dressed in a sparkly flapper gown with a matching fur, she brought her signature energy to the stage.

This wasn’t Gaga’s first time on SNL. She’s been a musical guest four times before, but hosting is a rarer gig for her. The last time she took the helm was that 2013 episode with R. Kelly. Now, over a decade later, she’s using the platform to reflect on her evolution—from pop star to actress and back to music—while keeping the mood light. With Mayhem out and a Razzie on her shelf, Gaga proved she’s still got plenty to say, on stage and off.
