Fans of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon have another exciting show to look forward to! The upcoming HBO series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, is already preparing for a second season—even before the first has aired.

This new Game of Thrones prequel is based on George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas. The first season, set to release in late 2025, will consist of six episodes and take place nearly a century before Game of Thrones. It follows the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall (played by Peter Claffey) and his young squire, Egg (played by Dexter Sol Ansell), who will later become King Aegon V.

Unlike previous series filled with dragons and massive battles, this story focuses more on personal journeys, chivalry, and political intrigue.

In a recent interview, George R.R. Martin shared his thoughts on the show after watching all six episodes of Season 1. He confirmed that showrunner Ira Parker and his team are already working on Season 2.

“I’ve seen Dunk and Egg, the first season, and it’s great,” Martin said. “And now they’re working on the second season. Those are two characters that are really special to me, and they’re unusual. They’re not what most people would expect in a fantasy story.”

He also noted that the series has a different tone compared to other Westeros stories.

“It’s a little softer. It’s a little more humorous. I hope the audience will be open to that kind of change.”

Unlike Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon, which are filled with war and dragons, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will focus more on character-driven storytelling. Martin hinted that this change may surprise some fans, but he hopes they will enjoy the new approach.

In August 2024, he visited the show’s set in Northern Ireland, sharing how much he enjoyed seeing the world of Dunk and Egg brought to life. However, he also spoke about the challenges of working in television, saying:

“It can be great, but, you know, like I said, this is a complicated business, and you really never know. It’s always changing too. A new writer starts a career and he’s doing a show, and he gets hired to do another show and a new showrunner comes in; the ratings are low, the ratings are high.”

Martin also reflected on the difficulties of adapting books for TV, admitting that some projects are enjoyable, while others are frustrating.

“You try to make the story as good as it can be, and some fans will like it, some fans will not like it. You’re always going to get criticism, but you’ve got to keep trying.”

For fans still waiting for his long-delayed novel The Winds of Winter, Martin reassured them that his books remain his top priority.
