Moon Studio’s ‘Ori’ Series Has Now Sold Over 15 Million Copies as of 2025

The Ori video game series, created by Moon Studios, has reached a major achievement. The two games—Ori and the Blind Forest and Ori and the Will of the Wisps—have together sold more than 15 million copies worldwide.

Thomas Mahler, the director of both titles and co-founder of Moon Studios, shared this exciting news on his X account. He celebrated the success of the small team, which has fewer than 100 members, and pointed out how far the games have come.

Ori and the Blind Forest first launched on March 11, 2015, after four years of development. Its sequel, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, arrived exactly five years later in 2020. Both games belong to the Metroidvania genre, a style that blends exploration and action. When Moon Studios started working on the first game, many warned them that this type of game was no longer popular.

Mahler reflected on this in his announcement, saying, “Not too shabby for a Metroidvania and a genre we were told is dead when we started to work on it! So thank you to everyone who supported us so far – MUCH LOVE!

The sales numbers are even more impressive because they don’t include players who tried the games through Xbox Game Pass. The first title joined the service in 2018, while the second was available on day one in 2020. Mahler confirmed in the comments on X that the 15 million figure only counts direct sales, not Game Pass users. This suggests the total number of people who have played the games could be much higher.

The games are available on multiple platforms, including Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC, helping them reach a wide audience.

This is the first time Moon Studios has publicly shared specific sales data for the series. In 2020, they reported that Ori and the Will of the Wisps had reached 2.8 million players, but no detailed sales figures were given for either game until now. The success marks a big win for Xbox and Moon Studios, proving the lasting appeal of the Ori adventures.
