‘Mickey 17’ Races to Digital as Warner Bros. Braces for a Massive Loss

Warner Bros. is moving Mickey 17 to digital just 18 days after its theatrical release. The film will be available online starting March 25.

The movie has struggled at the box office. In its first weekend, it made $19 million in the U.S. and Canada. So far, it has earned $62 million worldwide. But with a $118 million budget and $80 million spent on marketing, it needs $340–400 million to break even. Warner Bros. expects to lose around $100 million.

In South Korea, Mickey 17 had a strong start, making $1.7 million on its opening day. It went on to earn $9 million in its first weekend. But in the U.S., ticket sales dropped fast. The film is expected to make just $7.5 million in its second weekend.

Critics gave Mickey 17 mostly positive reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a 78% score. Some praised its unique sci-fi story and humor. Others said it was too chaotic. Audience reactions were mixed, with a CinemaScore of “B.”

The film stars Robert Pattinson and is directed by Bong Joon-Ho (Parasite). Some viewers compared Mark Ruffalo’s character, a spaceship captain, to real-world political leaders.

With its disappointing box office numbers, Mickey 17 is now making a fast jump to digital platforms.
