Exciting Update on the Upcoming ‘Cloverfield’ Sequel from Director Babak Anvari

The long-awaited Cloverfield sequel has received an exciting update from its director, Babak Anvari. This project has been in the works since 2018, and it has been nearly two decades since the original Cloverfield movie made its big debut, directed by Matt Reeves. Fans of the sci-fi horror franchise have been eagerly waiting for news, and it seems like the sequel is finally moving forward.
Babak Anvari shared the latest on the Cloverfield sequel, confirming that the project is still under development at Paramount Pictures. While he couldn’t reveal too many details, he made it clear that he’s extremely excited about the movie and the direction it’s headed. “You know, everyone on that team, they’re very secretive, which I understand,” Anvari said. “Whatever happens, just know that hopefully you’re going to get something amazing.”
Anvari, who became attached to direct the sequel in 2022, has a solid background in the horror genre. He previously directed the critically acclaimed 2016 Persian-language psychological thriller Under the Shadow and the 2019 psychological horror film Wounds, starring Dakota Johnson. With his experience in crafting psychological tension, fans are hoping the sequel will live up to the legacy of the original.
Although Anvari has kept most details about the plot and characters under wraps, he did confirm that the sequel will not follow the found-footage style of the first film.
This means that the new movie may have a different format and storytelling approach compared to the original, which was presented as a shaky cam-style documentary following a group of New Yorkers trying to escape a city under attack by a giant monster.
The Cloverfield sequel is being produced by J.J. Abrams, who was behind the first film, along with Hannah Minghella and Jon Cohen. Joe Barton has been hired to write the screenplay, adding to the growing excitement for what could be an intense and thrilling follow-up to the beloved franchise.
The original Cloverfield movie was released in 2008, directed by Matt Reeves and written by Drew Goddard. It told the story of a group of young people in New York City who are trying to survive after a massive monster appears and starts rampaging through the city, accompanied by smaller creatures.
The film, which starred Michael Stahl-David, Odette Yustman, Mike Vogel, Jessica Lucas, Lizzy Caplan, and Ben Feldman, was a commercial and critical success, earning a Certified Fresh rating of 79% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The success of Cloverfield led to two standalone sequels, Cloverfield Lane in 2016 and The Cloverfield Paradox in 2018, but this new sequel is expected to take the story in a fresh direction. Fans of the franchise are hopeful that the long wait will be worth it and that the upcoming film will live up to the legacy of the original.
