The Goonies are officially making a comeback.
Warner Bros. has confirmed that a sequel to the beloved 1985 adventure film is in development, with Potsy Ponciroli set to write the script. The project is moving forward nearly 40 years after the original movie first hit theaters.
Steven Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger, and Holly Bario will be producing for Amblin Entertainment, joined by Chris Columbus, who wrote the original screenplay. Lauren Shuler Donner will serve as an executive producer. At this stage, no director has been announced, and plot details remain under wraps.
The original movie, directed by Richard Donner and produced by Spielberg, followed a group of kids who stumbled upon an ancient treasure map and embarked on a wild adventure to uncover the hidden riches.
Starring Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, Ke Huy Quan, and Martha Plimpton, the film became an instant hit, grossing $125 million worldwide on a $19 million budget. Over the years, it has cemented its place as a cult classic, even earning a spot in the National Film Registry in 2017.
Ke Huy Quan, who recently starred in the action film “Love Hurts,” has seen a major career resurgence thanks to his Oscar-winning role in “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and his appearance in the Marvel series “Loki.” He spoke about the possibility of a “Goonies” reunion during the “Love Hurts” premiere in Hollywood, where he was joined by Corey Feldman.
“It’s one of the most asked questions in my life,” Quan said. “I would love for it to happen.”
Feldman echoed the enthusiasm, saying, “All I can say is, get us all together. Everybody is looking good. Sean’s looking good. Josh is looking good. We’re all looking good still, and we’re all alive. Goonies never say die… There’s hope.”
The sequel announcement comes just weeks after a special reunion at the TCL Chinese Theatre, where Quan was honored with a hand and foot imprint ceremony. The event brought back memories of the film’s impact, as fans and cast members celebrated its legacy.
For years, rumors about a sequel have circulated, with cast members expressing both excitement and skepticism. As recently as last year, Feldman and Plimpton were vocal about their doubts regarding another installment. Now, with a script officially in the works, it looks like the long-awaited return to the world of “The Goonies” may finally happen.
Potsy Ponciroli, known for “Old Henry,” “Still the King,” and “Greedy People,” has been tapped to write the sequel’s screenplay. He has also worked on projects like “Motor City” and “The Rescue,” along with directing music videos and commercials for artists across rock, rap, and country genres.
With the script now in development, all eyes are on Warner Bros. for further updates. Will the original cast return? What kind of adventure awaits? We’ll have to wait and see.
