Recently, the first teaser trailer for MCU’s ‘Agatha All Along’ was released. The trailer showcased mystery, magic, and plenty of drama about to unfold in the next MCU installment.
We know that the show will focus on Agatha Harkness as she seeks to reclaim her magic following her imprisonment at the hands of the Scarlet Witch. Recently, actor Joe Locke teased a lot of details regarding the show, however, he also confirmed that his character Billy Kaplan – will be gay in the show, but that it will be done tastefully.
The backlash started almost immediately, and many fans started comparing the show to Star Wars’ ‘The Acolyte’ which was teased by the showrunner as “the gayest” Star Wars show to date.
Fans are afraid that ideology will once again take precedence over the story and that DEI politics and sexual orientation will needlessly be shoved down everybody’s throats, and they are fundamentally wrong.
There are two massive differences when you are comparing ‘The Acolyte’ and ‘Agatha All Along.’ ‘The Acolyte’ was an original show. It was inspired by the EU yes in some ways, but it’s been created by Headland almost from scratch, her characters drawing no particular inspiration from already established characters. I don’t agree that ‘The Acolyte’ was woke, It definitely could have been a lot worse, but still the show suffered plenty from comments that were most likely made to attract the attention of the show.
‘Agatha All Along’ is also an original series, as far as I can tell it’s not inspired by any specific comic storyline, like for example ‘Secret Invasion’ but you can clearly see and know what the inspiration for the characters is.
Billy Kaplan is taken from the comics, he is known as Wiccan, one of the most powerful magic users and also the reincarnated soul of Wanda’s son. The twist is that Billy is gay in the comics, and has been for years now, his relationship with Hulkiling is one of the most notable traits and recognizable aspects of his character.
Making him straight for the show would be equally as insulting as making a straight character gay just for the sake of agenda-pushing. Making Billy Kaplan gay is absolutely comic-accurate, and I honestly doubt that ‘Agatha All Along’ is trying to draw in massive audiences, it’s been tailored for specific demographics which its aesthetics, themes, and the fact that it’s going to be a musical clearly reflect.
