‘Agatha All Along’ has so far teased plenty of mysteries and only explained some of them so far. We figured out who exactly mysterious Teen is, but this seems to have opened up a different can of worms that won’t be explained until the final episode.

One interesting mystery was introduced in the second episode, and fans have been debating about it ever since – the mysterious black heart on the list of Agatha’s possible recruits for her coven.

If you can recall, Lilia Calderu provided Agatha with the list of her coven members. One name on the list was missing instead it was replaced by a black heart. Agatha assumed that the black heart in question was actually Mrs. Hart, who was the Green Witch, but Lilia couldn’t make it green because she had only a black pen.

Some fans assumed that black heart was actually Rio Vidal, Agatha’s former lover and (at the time) presumably Mephisto’s gender-bent “son” Blackheart, a notable demon from Marvel comics.

Now following episode 6, we were all wrong. Jac Schaeffer recently sat down with The Wrap to discuss the show and she was asked about one specific detail.

In Episode 6 in one of the flashback scenes, Eddie, Billy’s boyfriend calls him his “black heart” and Jac Schaeffer confirms that the black heart on paper is truly a reference to the Teen aka Billy Kaplan aka Billy Maximoff:

While we talk of Rio, there is a text that Billy gets from his boyfriend that says, “You are my heart.” It is a black heart. So is this coming down to interpretation again, or can you give an answer here? Because everyone assumed, I assumed, that Rio was the black heart, because she says, “My heart is black and it beats for you.” So who is the black heart? Can you say?

Yeah, Billy’s the black heart.

The showrunner was then asked how this made sense in terms of the coven numbers. If Teen was always supposed to be part of the coven, then we have one “extra” member on the road, previously in the form of Mrs. Hart, and now in the form of Rio Vidal.

But this means now the math is not mathing. Because according to Lilia’s list, the coven was supposed to be Agatha, Lilia, Jen, Alice, and then Billy. Do we have an extra on the road with Rio?

First, I would say, you know, please see future episodes. And when I say it at this point Andi, when I’m saying “please see future episodes,” it’s no longer about — to me, and the way that I consume content — it is now less about the sort of concrete answers of things, and more about, as we move forward, there will be more information and more fleshing out, both in terms of character and just a richness that will enhance interpretation, if that makes sense.

But your point about how the math is not mathing, witchcraft is not mathematical. Witchcraft is so much about intention. It is so elusive. And I’ve been so delighted at how seriously fans are taking the rules, and the trials. And I would say to that, bravo and thank you. And also, witchcraft is murky, and witchcraft is imprecise.

But, were we still correct in our assumption that Blackheart is lurking somewhere in the MCU? Is Teen connected to Mephisto? In the comics he is, but what about the MCU? In a separate interview, Schaeffer once again told us that more about Billy’s past will be uncovered in the context of Mephisto as the show goes on:

Um, there is just more to be revealed, is what I would say. I would just say that we are over halfway into this narrative, our players are on the board, and we have a lot of meat still left on the bone.
