‘Agatha All Along’ Star Talks About Being Queer in the Industry: “They are turning everyone gay and it happened”

‘Agatha All Along’ is the upcoming MCU release, a spinoff of the highly popular show ‘WandaVision.’ The show will follow Agatha Harkness as she breaks her imprisonment at the hands of the Scarlet Witch and returns to the world, powerless. Agatha will gather a coven of witches to walk the Witches Road with her, in hopes of returning her powers.

The show has an interesting premise and a stellar cast. The cast for the upcoming show features Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness, Joe Locke as Billy Kaplan, and Sasheer Zamata as Jennifer Kale. Ali Ahn will play Alice Wu-Gulliver, while Maria Dizzia, Paul Adelstein, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, and Okwui Okpokwasili are set for roles yet to be confirmed. Debra Jo Rupp will appear as Sharon Davis, Patti LuPone as Lilia Calderu, and Aubrey Plaza as Rio Vidal/Green Witch.

Sasheer Zamata is one of the witches who will join Agatha on her journey. The actress plays Jennifer Kale, a witch who specializes in potions, and her powers come from alchemy and chemistry according to the show’s description of the character.

Kale recently sat down with Them and talked about being queer in the industry and getting cast in lesbian roles even before she knew she was a lesbian:

“I kept getting cast as queer women, I played a lesbian on Home Economics. I played a lesbian on Woke. I played a lesbian on Tuca & Bertie. A lesbian on Last O.G. I kept getting these roles. And this is before I myself was figuring out my identity. I was like, ’Whoa, what are these casting directors seeing that I’m not seeing? […]That’s what conservatives joke about all the time, They’re like, ‘Oh my God, they’re turning everyone gay.

Sasheer “came out” during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, and she did admit there were some changes:

It really did kind of change everything, I cut all my hair off. And I was always attracted to women, but I think [that] really boosted it. Even my friends and people around me were like, ‘Something is different about you. We can’t put our finger on it, but something’s happening.

The actress also explained that her character in the show won’t be necessarily queer but she did find ways to connect with Jennifer Kale:

It’s nice to be able to portray a character who has been an outcast for a lot of her life, and to be in a show that’s exploring so many cool female themes and queer themes, it feels very appropriate.

Sasheer is not the only Queer person on the set of ‘Agatha All Along’ as the show stars Joe Locke in the role of “the Teen.” The actor recently commented how he already started getting backlash from fans due to being gay and due to his character being openly gay. Both Kathryn Hahn and Aubrey Plaza recently hinted that there may be something more between their characters, but this remains to be seen. Have something to add? Let us know in the comments below!
