‘Alien vs. Predator’: A Surprise Crossover? Director Fede Álvarez Shares Bold Idea

The Alien and Predator franchises are two of the most legendary sci-fi series in movie history. Both have been revitalized under 20th Century Studios, now owned by Disney. The 2022 film Prey was a massive hit on streaming, introducing a fresh take on the Predator story.

Meanwhile, Alien: Romulus is being hailed as a return to the franchise’s horror roots. With sequels in development for both films and an upcoming TV series titled Alien: Earth from Fargo creator Noah Hawley, excitement around these classic sci-fi monsters is stronger than ever.

Given the resurgence of both franchises, many fans have been wondering if a new Alien vs. Predator (AVP) movie could be on the horizon. The original 2004 Alien vs. Predator film may not have been a critical darling, but it performed well at the box office, earning $177.4 million globally.

The 2007 sequel, Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem, followed with a worldwide total of $130.2 million. Despite mixed reviews, both films were financially successful, as their budgets were significantly lower than their earnings.

Now, Alien: Romulus director Fede Álvarez has shared his unique vision for an AVP reboot. Álvarez proposed a fresh take that would surprise audiences.

“I can’t speak for [Prey director Dan Trachtenberg]. At some point, once there’s another Alien, and I know he’s working on a sequel to Prey, one day if we feel like, ‘Yeah, that’s what we cannot wait to see,’ I think that’s a movie we could do. The way I would do it, most likely, if it could be done this way … It’s harder to keep secrets online … The best AVP will be the one that you don’t know is AVP until the other guy shows up.”

“You think you’re watching a Predator movie, and then they land in some place and there are creatures, and f*cking hell, it’s a Xenomorph. That would get me. ‘F*** yeah!’ You’d go crazy.”

“Or vice versa, you’re in an Alien movie, and then suddenly a mysterious creature is there, and you can hear that sound, and you see the cloak, and you go, ‘Is that a f*cking Predator?’ And then turns out it is. That would be the way to do it, don’t you think? Once you put it in the title, it’s like, ‘Spoiler alert.’

What makes his idea intriguing is the way he envisions revealing the crossover. Rather than marketing it as an Alien vs. Predator film from the start, Álvarez suggests keeping it a secret.

Keeping such a big reveal a secret in today’s digital age would be challenging, but if pulled off, it could make for one of the most shocking and memorable moments in sci-fi movie history.
