Supreme Leader Kylo Ren, aka Ben Solo, is the main antagonist of the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Over the course of those three movies, he became a fan-favorite character and one of the biggest bright spots of the new films. But how many appearances did Kylo Ren have in total, and will we see more of him? It’s time to find out.
Movies & TV show featuring Kylo Ren in order by release date
As the Star Wars franchise expanded, so did the number of very cool characters. If you want to go ahead and watch all Kylo Ren appearances right away, here’s the full list in order by release date:
- ‘Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens’ (2015)
- ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi (2017)
- ‘Star Wars Resistance’ (2018-2020)
- ‘Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker’ (2019)
‘Star Wars Resistance’ is an animated show on Disney+ that features Kylo Ren in only a handful of mentions and minor appearances but is still talked about and important to the story. In the following paragraphs and subheadings, I’ll explain how each of these appearances is connected and why Kylo Ren has so much appeal to fans despite being flawed.
Are Kylo Ren’s movies & TV show appearances connected? What’s the best way to watch them?
Seeing that all four of the movies and shows that Kylo Ren appeared in are, in fact, ‘Star Wars’ canon, of course, all his appearances are connected to each other and the overall history of the fictional galaxy.
When choosing the best way to watch them, I’d say it’s neither strictly by release date nor chronological order. I believe the best way to watch all these appearances is by watching the sequel trilogy first and then watching ‘Star Wars Resistance’ later.
I’m saying this because you get the most out of Kylo Ren in those three films, and his character arc is developed nicely through those three films. His role in ‘Resistance’ is quite minor and doesn’t add much to the character you didn’t learn in the trilogy, so you can watch that last as a cherry on top.
Another reason it might be cooler to watch all Kylo Ren movies first is that you can easily draw many comparisons and similarities between Darth Vader and Kylo Ren. Like, they were both Jedi who succumbed to the Dark Side that imposed tyrannical rule over the galaxy, and both eventually had redemptive qualities, returning to the Light Side.
If you do decide to watch all of these entries chronologically, you’ll need to adjust your view order a bit. In the next subheading, I’ll explain the chronological order in detail and also give you an idea of how it changes your viewership experience.
Kylo Ren appearances in chronological order
The chronological order of all Kylo Ren’s appearances is complicated, seeing that different seasons of ‘Star Wars Resistance’ happen at different points of the Star Wars timeline. So, if you want to watch Ren’s appearances strictly chronologically, you will have to separate certain seasons and episodes between the movies.
Your complete Kylo Ren chronological list looks like this:
- ‘Star Wars Resistance’ Season 1 Episode 1-19 (2018-2020)
- ‘Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens’ (2015)
- ‘Star Wars Resistance’ Season 1 Episode 20-21 (2018-2020) *parallel to Episode VII
- ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi’ (2017)
- ‘Star Wars Resistance’ Season 2 (2018-2020) *parallel & after ‘Episode VIII‘
- ‘Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker’ (2019)
As I’ve mentioned before, if you’re watching this list only because you want to see Kylo Ren, then the ‘Star Wars Resistance’ show shouldn’t be your priority. I suggest watching the sequel trilogy first to get the most out of the character – and out of Adam Driver’s awesome performance.
The most Kylo Ren you get in the show is a hologram, and Driver doesn’t voice the character. Rather, the few lines he had were done by Matthew Wood, the same voice actor who portrayed Ello Asty.
Where to watch all the movies mentioned above?
You can watch all of these movies & TV show(s) on Disney+. Every Star Wars canon (and most non-canon) entry can be found on the streaming giant, as Disney bought Lucasfilm and all ‘Star Wars’ rights in 2012 for over $4 billion.
If you don’t have a Disney+ subscription, you can likely find the movies for buy/rent on Amazon, Apple TV, Vudu, DIRECTV, Google Play Movies, YouTube, Microsoft Store, AMC on Demand, or Spectrum on Demand.
Will we see more of Kylo Ren?
Currently, no Kylo Ren appearances are planned – or announced, at least – in the future of the Star Wars franchise. However, given the popularity of the character and Adam Driver’s willingness to play the role again, it’s hard not to believe that Kylo Ren might eventually be included in the franchise’s future.
He died at the end of Episode IX, but so did Darth Vader at the end of ‘Episode VI‘, and the character still returned countless times after that. Remember, the two had a similar character arc in their respective trilogies, so I’m sure the fans would love to see more of Kylo Ren, too. But, seeing the character passed away, how could this happen?
Well, there are two options. The first one is to play into the Force Ghost thing and have Ben Solo appear in a cameo, as did his mother, grandfather, and Jedi Masters Yoda and Obi-Wan Kenobi. We did see Ben’s soul seemingly become one with the Force when he died at the end of the movie, but I just find this option a bit repetitive and, quite frankly, irrelevant.
I’d like to see more of Ben Solo’s past – his way to becoming Kylo Ren. It doesn’t have to be this deep lore as it became with Anakin Skywalker – like, reaching into every step of his life in profound detail – but a bit of a backstory in the form of a season or two of a show, or an origin story type of movie wouldn’t hurt.
And lo and behold, it could very well happen eventually. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said:
Certainly, those are not characters we’re going to forget. They will live on, and those are conversations that are going on with the creative team as well.
On top of that, Adam Driver shared that he’s ‘totally not against’ playing Ben Solo again, so who knows? Maybe we’ll get another Kylo Ren appearance sooner rather than later.
