Before the Mandalorians we know today, Boba Fett was the original armored Bounty Hunter. First appearing as a mysterious bounty hunter working for the Empire, Boba Fett became a fan favorite. Since then, he has made eight appearances in films and TV shows and is now a very different character from his first appearance. Here are all eight appearances from Boba Fett in film and TV shows!
Movies and TV shows featuring Boba Fett in release order
Boba Fett made his first mainstream appearance in 1980 during ‘Empire Strikes Back,’ but not many people know that he appeared first in animated form during the 1978 ‘Star Wars Holiday Special.’ He was originally a villain but has since gone through a redemption arc and has become a more honorable character. If you don’t have the time, here are all of his appearances in release order.
- ‘Star Wars; Episode IV – A New Hope’ (1977)
- ‘Star Wars Holiday Special’ (1978)
- ‘Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back’ (1980)
- ‘Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi’ (1983)
- ‘Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones’ (2002)
- ‘Star Wars The Clone Wars’ (2008)
- ‘The Mandalorian’ (2019)
- ‘The Book of Boba Fett’ (2021)
Now, this may seem like a lot, but trust me, it’s more simple than it looks. In the rest of this article, we will explain how these are all connected and how he appeared in ‘A New Hope’ even though his first technical mainstream appearance wasn’t until ‘Empire Strikes Back.’
This article will contain spoilers, so read at your own risk.
Are all Boba Fett’s appearances connected? What order should you watch them?
Apart from the holiday special, all of Boba Fett’s appearances are officially part of Star Wars canon, and you should watch them in release order. This is because his appearances in ‘Attack of the Clones’ and ‘Clone Wars’ are not the version of Boba Fett we know today, as he is much younger.
The holiday special is optional, but it is interesting to see the original concept for the character.
We meet Boba Fett for the first time during the ‘Star Wars Holiday Special,’ which is not canon. He first appears as a friend to Luke, Han, Leia, and Chewie but then betrays them later in the special. We get our first mainstream appearance of him in ‘Empire Strikes Back,’ where Vader hires him to track down the main trio. After Han Solo gets frozen in Carbonite, he takes him away on his ship to give Han to Jabba the Hunt for a bounty.
However, you may wonder why we put ‘A New Hope’ in the release order when he didn’t appear until the sequel. That is because when George Lucas released the special edition DVDs, he added a scene with Han Solo and Jabba the Hutt, which has Boba Fett making a quick appearance when he walks past the Millenium Falcon.
This then takes us to ‘Return of the Jedi,’ where Boba Fett only briefly appears at the start. He is seen at Jabba’s Palace and then tries to help Jabba stop the heroes from escaping. That’s when Han Solo ‘kills’ Boba Fett by accidentally hitting him with a staff that breaks his jetpack and sends him to the Sarlacc Pit.
We never see Boba Fett again until 2002 when he appears as a child played by Danel Logan in ‘Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones’. In this film, we find out that Boba Fett is a clone of his father, Jango Fett. Up until this point, no one knew the backstory of the character.
We see him follow his father throughout the film but then witness his father get killed by Mace Windu at the Battle of Geonosis. He then picks up his father’s helmet, which he repaints into his classic armor. We also see Jango Fett make a few moves to evade Obi-Wan Kenobi during the film, which are reminiscent of what Boba Fett does in the original trilogy, showing he learned his techniques from his father.
The next time we see Boba Fett is in ‘Star Wars Clone Wars.’ He only appears in a few episodes but is on a patch of vengeance against Mace Windu. After teaming up with a few other Bounty Hunters, they devise a plan to assassinate Windu. This ultimately fails and is the last we see of the character until ‘The Mandalorian.’
Until ‘The Mandalorian,’ it was assumed that Boba Fett was dead. He was brought back in Legends, but with Disney restarting everything, fans just assumed he had died, as there were no signs of him in the sequels. That was until we met him again in ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 2. When we first meet him, he is fighting Din Djarin, who had hold of his armor as he was skeptical of a non-Mandalorian having the armor. After a showdown with the Empire, Boba Fett explains it was his father’s armor, which the Mandalorians gifted.
The two team up a couple more times during the season, eventually leading to Boba Fett’s own show.
In ‘The Book of Boba Fett,’ Boba Fett turns over a new leaf and rules Mos Espa by being respected instead of feared. It was a different show than what fans were expecting and showed the Bounty Hunter in more of a heroic light than he was before. The show ends with him ruling Mos Espa, and we have yet to see him make another appearance.
Boba Fett’s appearances in chronological order
The chronological order is different from the release order, and that is because George Lucas created the prequels many years after the original trilogy.
- ‘Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones’ (2002)
- ‘Star Wars The Clone Wars’ (2008)
- ‘Star Wars; Episode IV – A New Hope’ (1977)
- ‘Star Wars Holiday Special’ (1978)
- ‘Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back’ (1980)
- ‘Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi’ (1983)
- ‘The Mandalorian’ (2019)
- ‘The Book of Boba Fett’ (2021)
Where can you watch the above-mentioned movies & shows?
All of these movies and shows are available to watch on Disney +, which also has all the other Star Wars content.
Will Boba Fett be featured in future movies or shows?
We will likely see Boba Fett in Star Wars projects again; it is just unclear when. We are getting a film in the future that is wrapping up all the shows, so it could either be then or we could get him beforehand. As he is currently ruling Mos Espa, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him appear in ‘The Mandalorian’ again or any other show.
