Star Wars has a pretty massive cinematic world; between 9 movies and several live-action series, there is plenty of content to cover, and only so much can be told on the screen. This is why Star Wars lore has been slowly expanding over the last decade to include canon books written by multiple authors covering hundreds of years of in-universe timeline. Naturally, much of the older Star Wars content now belongs in the “Legends’ portions. Those are stories that are either confirmed not to be canon or have the potential to become canon, but their status is currently unknown.

This is why we decided to sort all canon works, and some questionable canon works in this ultimate Star Wars reading order. This will be especially useful if you’re just starting out with the franchise and you’re feeling too overwhelmed by the sheer amount of content.

How many eras do Star Wars canon books cover?

Now, this is an interesting question. As you know by now, Star Wars doesn’t follow our universe’s chronology and has its own separate system of timekeeping. One major event that is used for navigating around the Star Wars chronology is the Destruction of Death Star, which took place during the Battle of Yavin and marked the killing blow for the empire. The Battle of Yavin is “year zero.” The events that took place BEFORE the Battle of Yavin are marked as BBY and the events that took place are marked as ABY.

There are several eras that we need to take into account when sorting books by chronological order, and here’s a short overview with more detailed descriptions being provided further in this guide:

  1. The High Republic Era (500 BBY to 100 BBY)
  2. The Republic Era (100 BBY to 19 BBY)
  3. Imperial Era (19 BBY to 5 ABY)
  4. New Republic Era (5 ABY to 34 ABY)

Now for the complete guide, read on.

All Star Wars High Republic Era Books in chronological order

The High Republic Era is often described as a period of blessed peace and the sudden expansion of the Galactic Republic, and it’s also conveniently the time during which the Jedi order was at its most celebrated and the highest. The Jedi order accumulated much of its reputation during the period of the High Republic, and it’s also the longest period that the books cover, lasting 400 years in total, spanning 500 BBY to 100 BBY. During this Era, the Sith were thought to be extinct, and it was that overconfidence that made the High Republic eventually fall and what made Jedi too sure of their abilities and too comfortable in their status. The canon books following the High Republic Era are as follows:

  1. ‘The High Republic: Convergence’ by Zoraida Córdova (382 BBY)
  2. ‘Quest for the Hidden City’ by George Mann (382 BBY)
  3. ‘Path of Deceit’ by Tessa Gratton & Justina Ireland (382 BBY)
  4. ‘The Battle of Jedha’ by George Mann (382 BBY)

  6. ‘Cataclysm’ by Lydia Kang (382 BBY)
  7. ‘Quest for Planet X’ By Tessa Gratton (382 BBY)
  8. ‘Jedi Brave in Every Way’ by Charles Soule, Rosemary Soule (Exact year unknown)
  9. ‘Into the Dark’ by Claudia Gray (232 BBY)
  10. ‘Light of the Jedi‘ by Charles Soule (232 BBY)
  11. ‘The Great Jedi Rescue’ by Cavan Scott (232 BBY)
  12. ‘A Test of Courage’ by Justina Ireland (232 BBY)
  13. ‘The Rising Storm’ by Cavan Scott (231 BBY)
  14. ‘Race to Crashpoint Tower‘ by Daniel Jose Older (231 BBY)
  15. ‘Out of the Shadows’ by Justina Ireland (231 BBY)
  16. ‘Tempest Runner’ by Cavan Scott (231 BBY)
  17. ‘Mission to Disaster’ by Justina Ireland (230 BBY)
  18. ‘Midnight Horizon’ by Daniel Jose Older (230 BBY)
  19. ‘The Fallen Star’ by Claudia Gray (230 BBY)
  20. ‘The Eye of Darkness’ by George Mann (229 BBY)

There are numerous books scheduled to be released in 2024 that will cover more years of High Republic, such as ‘Defy the Storm’ and ‘Escape from Valo’. Don’t worry, however, as we will update this guide as soon as the new material is released along with proper years.
