Spider-Man is one of Marvel’s most popular superheroes ever since Peter Parker first appeared in the comics. In fact, he’s one of the most popular superheroes in general, not just Marvel. There have been three different live-action Spidey in movies so far, but one we can never forget is the first – Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker from the early to mid-2000s.
After his big on-screen comeback in 2021 in Spider-Man: No Way Home, fans are eager to know if there’s a chance at another Tobey Maguire appearance as Parker. We might not know the answer for a while longer. What we can do, however, is revisit all four Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies in order. Enjoy!
How many Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies are there?
So far, there are four Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies in total. The first three are a part of the early to mid-2000s Maguire-led trilogy, while, in the fourth, Tobey appeared as Spider-Man within the MCU.
Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies in order (at a glance)
As I’ve mentioned, there are four Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies in total. They are as follows:
- Spider-Man (2002)
- Spider-Man 2 (2004)
- Spider-Man 3 (2007)
- Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
In Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), Tobey Maguire appears as Spider-Man from his own universe after the MCU’s Spider-Man (portrayed by Tom Holland) and Doctor Strange botch a spell and open up the multiverse.
Are Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies connected? Do you need to watch them in a specific order?
The first three Spider-Man movies led by Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker are connected as a trilogy, and the plot happens chronologically. Therefore, you need to watch them in their specific release order.
The fourth movie, however, isn’t a part of the initial trilogy and can be viewed separately, although you’ll have the best understanding of Tobey Maguire’s role if you watch the initial trilogy first.
What is the best way to watch Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies?
The best way to watch the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies is by release date – as it is also the chronological order of the plots for each movie. Although the fourth move isn’t directly connected to the initial trilogy, it would be best to watch it last to get a better feel of Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker and to know his backstory before he appears after a 14-year hiatus.
Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies in order (by release date)
1. Spider-Man (2002)
Peter Parker is a shy, dorky teenager with a keen sense of photography, which he uses to sell photos to a local news outlet. His life is turned upside down after he gets bitten by a genetically-modified, radioactive spider.
The bite mutates Peter’s genome, giving him spider-like abilities, including web-slinging from his wrists, wall, and ceiling crawling, incredible superhuman strength, balance, durability, and reflexes, and much more.
As he learns to control his new powers, Peter realizes there’s more to it than just being strong. He slowly takes responsibility and becomes a hero, fighting against a vengeful supervillain, the Green Goblin.
2. Spider-Man 2 (2004)
Peter Parker is now fully aware and accustomed to his new powers. However, realizing that the Green Goblin was none other than his best friend’s father, along with other issues in his failing personal life, caused Spidey to start losing his powers – namely, the web-slinging that was once his trademark.
Things go from bad to worse when a new enemy emerges – a brilliant scientist named Doctor Otto Octavius, who develops a deadly technology- and a villainous persona known as Doc Ock. Spidey will be forced to sacrifice more than he is willing in order to save the world from the maniacal professor.
3. Spider-Man 3 (2007)
After Doctor Otto Octavius is defeated and unfortunately killed in the process, Peter finally manages to patch up his broken life. Instead of giving up on Mary-Jane as he did before, Parker balances their relationship and the great responsibility he has as your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. The balance, however, does not last long.
Harry Osbourne, Peter’s former best friend, assumes his father’s mantle of the Green Goblin and sets out to get his revenge against Spider-Man. Apart from that, Peter struggles to bring Uncle Ben’s real killer – Flint Marko – to justice due to Marko being transformed into the Sandman – Spidey’s toughest enemy to date.
If that wasn’t bad enough, Dr. Curt Connors donned experiments turning him into another villain, aka the Lizard, but even that wasn’t the end. An alien entity bonded with Parker, amplifying his powers immensely but also turning his suit black and altering his personality to make all of his darkest traits intensify and come out to the surface.
4. Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
MCU’s Peter Parker (Tom Holland) had his identity revealed to the entire world by his dying nemesis, Mysterio. Parker seeks help from Doctor Strange to reverse that and make everyone forget his identity as Spider-Man, but he keeps interrupting Strange in the middle of the spell, causing the Sorcerer Supreme to botch it.
The consequences are dire – as the very fabric of the multiverse starts opening up, attracting villains from all other universes that knew Spider-Man’s identity into this particular universe. That included the Green Goblin, Doc Ock, the Sandman, and other supervillains from previous, non-MCU Spider-Man movies.
It also attracted other Spideys, including Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s incarnations of the character, and they teamed up with the MCU’s Spidey to try and help save their former enemies and the multiverse in the process.
Where to watch Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies?
The original Tobey Maguire trilogy is still available on both Netflix and Hulu, at least in the US (if you live in a country where it isn’t available, you can always use a VPN to stream Netflix US). If that’s not an option for you, the trilogy is available for free on NBC or to buy/rent on Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, Google Play, and iTunes.
As for Spider-Man: No Way Home, interestingly, it isn’t on Disney+ like other MCU Spider-Man movies due to some contractual negotiations. Instead, you can find it on Hulu or HBO Max in most countries and on STARZ. You can also buy/rent it on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu.
Will there be more Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies?
All three Spideys survived the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which leaves the possibility of them returning to future Spider-Man projects. However, neither Marvel Studios nor Sony has officially announced or disputed plans to have Tobey Maguire return for another stint as Spider-Man in any movie.
That said, we can’t make the same mistake twice and say it’s off the table. Who knows? Perhaps we’ll have to wait for 14 years again for another Tobey Maguire Spider-Man film.
