Here’s Why Anakin’s Lightsaber Did Not Turn Red in ‘Revenge of the Sith’

‘Star Wars: The Acolyte’ released its final episode this week. Even though the show suffered from pacing and other issues for most of its run, two major cameos and one awesome moment from the show for some part managed to redeem it, leaving us hopeful for the future.

The awesome moment we are talking about is the moment after Osha kills Master Sol and we can see in real time how Sith lightsabers are made.

When Qimir approaches Osha as she is looking at the dead body of Master Sol, she activates her lightsaber and we can briefly see the Kyber crystal becoming corrupted and her lightsaber turning slowly from blue to red. The official in-universe explanation for it is that Osha poured all her negative emotions like grief, hatred, anger, and others into the Kyber crystal, corrupting it. The reverse process is also possible, as this is how Ahsoka made her white lightsabers.

Considering that Osha is far from the only Sith feeling extreme negative emotions on screen, this begs to question of why this is the first time we’ve seen a lightsaber turning red. The most notable moment during which that should have happened is in ‘Revenge of the Sith’ when Anakin kills the younglings, and yet it never happened. Why?

Well first and foremost, it absolutely logically could have happened, but lightsabers don’t automatically turn red when someone embraces the dark side and his crystal wasn’t taken from a fallen Jedi. There’s also the fact that Anakin’s lightsaber needed to stay blue for continuity issues.

The process of bleeding a crystal involves a conscious effort to do so, Anakin wasn’t holding his crystal when he murdered all those people, and no matter how many people he proceeded to kill his lightsaber wouldn’t have turned red simply because he wasn’t attempting to bleed the crystal.

Osha’s situation was different, she bled the crystal unconsciously as well, but it was exposed while she was holding it, meaning that her emotions were directly connected to it.

Darth Vader’s process of creating his red lightsaber was actually shown In ‘Star Wars: Darth Vader #5’ it shows exactly how difficult it was.
