Andy Muschietti Teases ‘Batman: Brave & the Bold’—Delays, Surprises, and a Smaller Film in the Works

After James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav made it clear that the new DC Universe (DCU) would have a more focused direction, saying, “There’s not going to be four Batmans.”

A month later, Gunn and Safran shared their first plans for the DCU, which included a movie called The Brave and the Bold. This film will introduce the DCU’s new Batman, inspired by Grant Morrison’s popular comic book series from 2006 to 2013.

Ben Affleck, who played Batman in the old DCEU, won’t be returning for this version. At the same time, Matt Reeves’s version of Batman from The Batman will continue as a separate storyline under the “DC Elseworlds” label, which is used for stories outside the main DCU timeline.

In June 2023, Andy Muschietti, the director of The Flash, was chosen to direct The Brave and the Bold. His sister, Barbara Muschietti, will co-produce the film along with Gunn and Safran. This marks an important step in building the new direction for the DCU.

Since the movie was first announced, we haven’t heard much about it, except that Batman will be older than Superman in the DCU. Gunn also faced criticism for taking so long to get the Batman movie started in the new universe.

Now, over a year after the announcement, Andy Muschietti shared an update on the movie during his California Secreta Podcast, and the news isn’t great.

Muschietti revealed that The Brave and the Bold won’t be happening anytime soon. He mentioned that before starting work on the Batman movie, he might direct a smaller film.

“I’m now writing a science fiction movie that I would like to do… Batman is a project that’s been postponed a bit. So there could be another film before it, possibly that one.”

This is definitely disappointing news, especially for those hoping to see the Batman movie in the next few years.

The Brave and the Bold will focus on members of the “Bat-Family,” a group of heroes connected to Batman, and will introduce Damian Wayne, Batman’s son, as the new Robin.

James Gunn shared that the story will explore the complex relationship between Batman and Damian, calling it a “strange father-and-son story.” This dynamic will bring a new emotional depth to the film, showing how Batman, a seasoned hero, deals with being a father to a rebellious and highly skilled young vigilante.
