In a recent interview, Anthony Mackie shared his thoughts on his longtime friend, Jeremy Renner, and his remarkable recovery after the terrifying snowplow accident that nearly cost Renner his life. The two actors, who have known each other since starring in The Hurt Locker in 2008, both joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe later on.
Renner, 54, was seriously injured on January 1, 2023, when he was crushed by a seven-ton snowplow while trying to clear snow near his mountain home in Reno. The accident left him with over 30 broken bones, a collapsed lung, and a lacerated liver.
He had jumped out of the snowplow but ended up getting caught underneath it. Despite the severe injuries, Renner never viewed himself as a victim.
Mackie, who was among the first to visit Renner in the hospital, reflected on the experience, saying, ‘I was really surprised and hurt when I got the news. The first thing I thought was, “I need to be by his side.”’
Even after his accident, Renner kept his sense of humor and would joke about how much he hated the situation, despite the painful recovery. Mackie admired how Renner never allowed himself to stay down and always kept his spirits high. ‘He’s the pure definition of a strong human being,’ Mackie said.
As Renner worked through the pain and gradually healed, Mackie received regular updates from him or his family. Renner, now with metal plates in his face and a rod in his leg, has made impressive progress.
Mackie joked, ‘Now he’s a cyborg. He’s Cyborg Renner!’ Renner even shared on Instagram how he felt like ‘the Tin Man,’ as his body adjusted to all the new hardware. Despite the hardships, he chose to focus on the recovery, pushing through the pain and moving forward.
Mackie praised his friend’s resilience and said it was beautiful to see Renner go from nearly immobile to back on his feet. Now, with a brand-new physical setup, Renner is almost like a real-life superhero—just like his character in the movies.
