Antony Starr’s Surprising Weakness on the Set of ‘The Boys’ Involved a Famous Actress

Originally a comic book series, ‘The Boys’ has transcended its origins through Amazon Prime’s streaming adaptation, which includes significant changes and additions, propelling the series to global acclaim. While Homelander remains a formidable villain in the series, actor Antony Starr has distinguished himself quite differently.

Starr’s portrayal has garnered immense praise from fans, drawing comparisons to Heath Ledger’s iconic Joker. In various interviews, the actor has actively discouraged fans from supporting Homelander, emphasizing the character’s undeniable villainy.

Recently, Starr disclosed a significant vulnerability he experienced on the set of The Boys, one that was also symbolically portrayed on-screen, adding an intriguing layer to his character. This weakness stems from a childhood crush, and we’ll reveal who it is in the following paragraphs.

Starr himself confirmed this revelation during an interview on Late Night with Seth Meyers, where he delved into his role and various aspects of the show’s production. Of particular interest was his childhood crush, none other than actress Elisabeth Shue.

“When I was little, and she was actually not that much older than me, but slightly. I was a big fan of The Karate Kid. I used to do karate when I was a little kid, and my dad took me to see The Karate Kid at the movies. And Ali, aka Elisabeth Shue, was probably my first on-screen crush.

Upon learning that Shue was cast in The Boys, he responded with excitement.

“And I’m like, ‘I’m going to work with Elisabeth Shue. Oh my God, what am I going to do? What am I going to wear? Am I going to look okay?’ And [it] turns out she is the nicest person.”

As fans of the series will recall, Shue played the role of Vought International boss Madelyn Stillwell in earlier seasons, and her character shared a deep and intimate relationship with Starr’s Homelander, culminating in tragedy as fans will remember.

Off-screen, Starr described their relationship as excellent. He fondly recounted an occasion when he assisted her:

She came up, and she goes, ‘I’m not feeling really good about this scene. I feel really insecure.’ And I said, ‘You’re Elisabeth Shue. You don’t come to this little jerk and say that! I don’t know, I’m trying to learn from you!’
