Apocalyptic Thriller ‘Bury Your Dead’ Gets First Teaser
Marco Dutra’s latest film, Bury Your Dead, is set to make its way to North American audiences thanks to a recent acquisition by Dark Star Pictures. The distribution deal was finalized by Berlin-based sales agent M-Appeal. Alongside the announcement, a teaser for the movie has also been unveiled.
This Brazilian production first premiered at the 2024 Sitges Film Festival and has been making rounds at notable festivals, including those in London, Tokyo, and Rio de Janeiro. The film is expected to continue its festival journey in the U.S. before hitting theaters this fall.
Michael Repsch, president of Dark Star Pictures, shared his excitement about the project. “Bury Your Dead is a postapocalyptic journey through many different genres of film, culminating in a unique cinematic world,” he said. “We are ecstatic to be working with such a great talent in Marco Dutra. His vision for this film is the kind of project Dark Star strives to find and bring to audiences.”
The story centers on Edgar Wilson, played by Selton Mello, a roadkill collector living in rural Brazil. Longing to leave his small-town existence behind, Edgar dreams of a new life with Nete, portrayed by Marjorie Estiano. However, things take a dark turn when Nete joins an apocalyptic cult with her family.
This sets Edgar on a dangerous journey through a crumbling world, accompanied by Tomás, an excommunicated priest played by Danilo Grangheia. Together, they navigate the chaos of a collapsing civilization, forcing Edgar to face his inner struggles and his troubled past.
Bury Your Dead is the latest in Dutra’s impressive filmography, which includes All the Dead Ones (Berlinale Competition, 2020), Good Manners (Locarno, 2017), and Hard Labor (Cannes Un Certain Regard, 2011). The film is produced by Rodrigo Teixeira and Lourenço Sant’Anna of RT Features, alongside Globoplay.
Dark Star Pictures, known for films such as Baby, Zenithal, and Kidnapping Inc., continues to bring bold and imaginative projects to North American audiences.
