Even before ‘Agatha All Along’ premiered, Kathryn Hahn and Aubrey Plaza sort of hinted that there would be romantic tension between their respective characters, Agatha Harkness and Rio Vidal aka Lady Death.

No one could anticipated the depth of their past relationship, and ultimately, the tragic way in which it ended. Eventually, it was confirmed that Agatha and Rio were in a romantic relationship which abruptly ended when Rio was forced to “reap” Agatha’s son Nicholas.

Agatha managed to strike a deal with Death, she would deliver the souls of Witches in exchange for Nicky’s (very limited) time. One day Nicky didn’t want to sacrifice witches and he died in his sleep.

Agatha and Rio have been enemies ever since, with Rio still hunting down Agatha due to her unnaturally long lifespan, presumably, as it has been never quite cleared up why exactly Rio wants to kill Agatha.

Despite their clashes, Rio described Agatha as her biggest emotional scar, and she was visibly hurt and distressed when Agatha decided to sacrifice herself to save Billy in the penultimate episode of the show.

Now Aubrey Plaza sat down with VMagazine to discuss her on-screen relationship with Hahn, and needless to say, it was a dream come true for the actress. Plaza said that working with Kathryn Hahn was an intense but exciting experience because both of them have a strong and passionate approach to acting.

She described the opportunity to play Hahn’s romantic counterpart in the show as a “dream come true,” emphasizing the charged, emotional energy between their characters, especially during a scene where her character, Vidal, heals Harkness’ wound in a darkly romantic way.

Kathryn and I are both very intense in our approach to acting, so I knew it was going to be really charged.

Plaza also shared that ‘Agatha All Along’ featured her ex-roommate, Patti LuPone, who she lived with during Plaza’s Broadway debut in ‘Danny and the Deep Blue Sea.’ Despite their playful and close bond, this was the first time they had to act professionally together. Plaza describes their relationship as one of “troublemakers,” noting how they love doing silly bits and characters together.

She and I love doing dumb bits and stupid characters, we’re both, like,
troublemakers.
