X-Men ’97 was a major success for Marvel, overcoming numerous challenges and changes to the established series canon. The show featured an engaging plot, retained the original series’ animation style, and evoked nostalgia for fans of the first season.

Marvel’s satisfaction with the series is evident in the upcoming second season, much to the delight of many fans. Despite its success, controversies surrounding the original creator and showrunner, Beau DeMayo, persist.

The latest development involves DeMayo’s potential appearance at the Primetime Emmy Awards later this year. He confirmed that he reached out to Disney for an invitation, but has yet to receive a response. This situation has raised questions about whether Disney might overlook the series’ creator due to these ongoing issues.

So, what exactly happened? Beau DeMayo was brought on to work on X-Men ’97 and completed his contributions for both seasons before the first one even aired. However, despite everything seeming fine, DeMayo was unexpectedly fired just before the premiere of Season 1. Reports suggest that he was difficult to work with and that Disney disapproved of his non-explicit OnlyFans account, which led to his dismissal. Although he remains credited, his original scripts were extensively revised, and Disney officially severed ties with him.

Now that X-Men ’97 has been nominated for a Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program, DeMayo has expressed a desire to attend the ceremony as the series’ original creator and showrunner, still credited as a writer on most episodes. He has reached out to Disney for an invitation, but recent Twitter posts indicate that his chances of attending are looking slim.

“To those asking, Marvel-Disney has not reached out to arrange my attendance to the Emmys for the show I created. We shall see. I created and produced [X-Men ’97], and was the entire creative point and leader on every aspect and stage of production. I wrote and conceived all of season two but can’t speak to the state of things now.”

As of now, it’s unclear whether Disney will extend an invitation to DeMayo. We hope that the situation is resolved positively for everyone involved.
