If there’s something that we know about the world of Star Wars, it’s that there are a lot of different stories that never found themselves in the movies or the shows. Instead, many stories about the different characters we’ve fallen in love with were told through the pages of different novels that tell stories about some of the most interesting characters we’ve ever seen in the galaxy.
Of course, while some of us would love to read about our favorite characters and stories in the Star Wars world, some don’t have the time to do so or the capacity to read these stories. That is where audiobooks come in handy to give the fan a different experience regarding the book while providing a more interactive way of getting into the story. The best part about some audiobooks is that some of the best narrators narrate them. So, with that said, let’s look at the best Star Wars audiobooks you certainly don’t want to miss out on.
20. ‘Galaxy’s Edge: Black Spire’ by Delilah S. Dawson
Narrated by: January LaVoy
Created to become a promotional storyline for the Galaxy’s Edge theme park in Disneyland, ‘Galaxy’s Edge: Black Spire’ is an incredibly captivating audiobook that will give you a good idea of what you can expect in the Disney theme park. Narrated by January LaVoy, it’s one of the best storylines that aren’t directly related to the main characters of the Star Wars universe.
The story follows the journey of Vi Moradi, who worked as Leia’s best spy. Her job involves hiding in the Black Spire Outpost on the planet Batuu, where she has to keep herself hidden from the eyes of the First Order. In that regard, the planet is full of smugglers, scum, rogues, and even Resistance fighters who could find life in LaVoy’s great skills as a narrator. And it’s also a great listening experience for those who want to get a good idea of the events in different galaxy areas before ‘Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker.’
19. ‘Dark Disciple’ by Christie Golden
Narrated by: Marc Thompson
When it comes to the characters we met during the events of ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars,’ two of them stand out in terms of their storylines as we never saw what happened to them in the end. We’re talking about Jedi Master Quinlan Vos, a rebellious Jedi, and the former Sith disciple named Asajj Ventress. And ‘Dark Disciple’ is a story that allows us to see what happened to them during the Clone Wars.
In this book, Vos was given an assignment by Jedi Master Yoda to assassinate Count Dooku because his death would put an end to the war. As such, Vos goes on a mission to try to kill the dreaded Sith Lord, only for him to meet Ventress, whose goals also align with his. They ended up forming a partnership and even a relationship that fans should be able to enjoy due to how unique the storytelling and the narration are.
18. ‘Canto Bight’ by Saladin Ahmed, Rae Carson, Mira Grant, and John Jackson Miller
Narrated by: Sean Kenin, Saskia Maarleveld, Marc Thompson, Jonathan Davis
While this isn’t exactly a book, ‘Canto Bight’ is still a captivating audiobook that fans should love because it contains many different stories that tell unique tales. ‘Canto Bight’ is a series of short stories that the narrators could read incredibly well. This allows all of the different stories in this audiobook to have a uniqueness that can only be the product of the unique way that the narrator tells the story.
Of course, one of the things that we know about this book is that it focuses on the casino planet of Canto Bight, which we saw in ‘Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi.’ Not many things were shown about this planet, but this audiobook allows fans to learn more about what goes on in Canto Bight and what kind of people usually frequent this side of the galaxy. And it’s a great break for Star Wars fans that may want to enjoy a low-stakes story before the events of ‘The Rise of Skywalker.’
17. ’Pirate’s Price’ by Lou Anders
Narrated by: Jim Cummings
Voiced by the legendary Jim Cummings, who gave life to the popular Hondo Ohnaka we met during the events of ‘The Clone Wars,’ ‘Pirate’s Price’ is one of the most entertaining audiobooks you could ever listen to because of how incredibly familiar Cummings’ voice is and how the audiobook feels like you are listening to Hondo himself.
This should be a fun book for you to listen to, especially if you want something on the lower end of the stakes. There are a lot of different audiobooks about Star Wars but ‘Pirate’s Price’ gives you a different kind of experience due to how chill it can be, especially because it feels like you’re listening to the legendary pirate that we learned to love in the many different animated Star Wars shows.
16. ’Star Wars: The Last Jedi: Cobalt Squadron’ by Elizabeth Wein
Narrated by: Kelly Marie Tran
We all met Kelly Marie Tran’s Rose during the events of ‘The Last Jedi.’ Not many things were revealed about her character during that movie, but we did see her going on an adventure with Finn when they were sent to Canto Bight to find the master codebreaker. Other than that, we didn’t get to see much about her or her sister, one of the big heroes in the earlier part of the film.
‘Cobalt Squadron,’ we get to learn more about Rose and her sister, Paige, as this audiobook was meant to be a prequel story to ‘The Last Jedi.’ In that regard, listening to this audiobook will allow you to learn more about the relationship between these two sisters. And we promise you that Paige’s death and Rose’s character development will make much more sense after listening to ‘Cobalt Squadron.’
15. ‘Last Shot: A Han and Lando Novel’ by Daniel José Older
Narrated by: Daniel José Older, Marc Thompson, January LaVoy
One of the things that we know about the Star Wars world is that the former scums of the galaxy have very compelling stories to tell. This is where ‘Last Shot’ comes in as one of the most interesting storylines you may want to follow regarding two of the most popular main characters in the galaxy: Han Solo and Lando Calrissian.
The storyline of ‘Last Shot’ is pretty incredible because it allows us to see Han entering a new chapter of his life as a dad. This gives us a different look into his character and what he must go through to adjust to his new life. And this proves to be his biggest challenge yet.
14. ‘Doctor Aphra’ by Sarah Kuhn
Narrated by: Emily Woo Zeller, Jonathan Davis, Sean Patrick Hopkins, Sean Kenin, Nicole Lewis, Carol Monda, Euan Morton, Catherine Taber, Marc Thompson
One of the newer characters introduced by the Disney era of Star Wars is Doctor Chelli Lorna Aphra, who debuted in the 2015 Darth Vader comic book series. She was portrayed as a young and enthusiastic archeologist like a space version of Indiana Jones. And the best thing about her is that she tends to attract fans because she completely dwells in the grey areas of the galaxy.
‘Doctor Aphra’ is an audiobook that should give you a good insight into the kind of character Aphra is. For one, it serves as a reintroduction of her character to those who couldn’t meet her in the comic books. On the other hand, this audiobook reimagines her character in a manner consistent with the lore but is still very much unique in her way. And we promise you that the adventures of a rogue archeologist will be fun for different people out there.
13. ‘Alphabet Squadron’ by Alexander Freed
Narrated by: Saskia Maarleveld
‘Alphabet Squadron’ is a good start to the storyline of the post-original trilogy era of Star Wars. While this audiobook doesn’t cover the storylines of the main characters of Star Wars, it allows us to meet new characters that are the focus of this narrative. And that’s why it’s one of the most interesting audiobooks for those who would rather learn more about the “other guys” than the main characters.
The audiobook follows the story of Alphabet Squadron, a group of veteran New Republic pilots looking to destroy a group of rebel TIE fighters known as Shadow Wing. In that regard, the audiobook is the counterpart to Marvel’s TIE Fighter miniseries. So, if you have time to read that miniseries, you should try it out because it works perfectly with ‘Alphabet Squadron.’ And the good thing about this audiobook is that it focuses more on aerial dogfights instead of the usual ground assaults that we see in Star Wars.
12. ‘Ahsoka’ by EK Johnston
Narrated by: Ashley Eckstein
Introduced in the 2008 ‘The Clone Wars’ movie, Ahsoka Tano has become one of the most popular characters in the entire lore. Of course, we saw her story being told in ‘The Clone Wars.’ But we know that there is more to Ahsoka Tano’s character because she was a supporting member of ‘Star Wars: Rebels’ and even appeared as a live-action character in ‘The Mandalorian’ and ‘The Book of Boba Fett’ before appearing in her own ‘Ahsoka’ series.
But the ‘Ahsoka’ book by EK Johnston is a good way to learn more about what Ahsoka went through after leaving the Jedi Order. A good part of this book was animated in ‘Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi.’ And the best part about this audiobook is that it is narrated by Ashley Eckstein, who voiced Ahsoka Tano in the animated shows.
11. ‘William Shakespeare’s Star Wars Series’ by Ian Doescher
Narrated by: Jessica Almasy, Daniel Davis, Johnathan Davis, Ian Doescher, Jeff Gurner, Ralph Adriel Johnson, January LaVoy, Marc Thompson
This is one of the most unique audiobooks you will ever encounter in your entire life due to how different Star Wars is compared to William Shakespeare’s works. But the thing about this audiobook is that it is quite entertaining, especially if you’re into Elizabethan drama and the way that these stories are told.
In short, ‘William Shakespeare’s Star Wars Series’ is a collection of audiobooks that seeks to retell the entire Star Wars storyline using an Elizabethan drama format. This gives it that 19th-century feel to it, and that’s why you might want to listen to this audiobook if you’re into a reimagining of the Star Wars movies.
10. ’The Queen’s Trilogy’ by EK Johnston
Narrated by: Catherine Taber
The story of Padmé Amidala is one of the best stories in the entire Star Wars universe. While most of us only know her stories from what we saw in the prequel trilogy and in ‘The Clone Wars,’ the thing is that her story goes beyond the movies and shows because she also has more stories to tell in the books. This is where ‘The Queen’s Trilogy’ comes in as a series of audiobooks that should allow fans to learn more about this strong female character.
In this audiobook, Catherine Taber reprises her role as Padmé Amidala after voicing the character throughout the animated ‘The Clone Wars’ series. This gives fans a sense of familiarity as they are already quite used to hearing Taber’s voice when it comes to Padmé. And her performance in the entire trilogy takes the story to a new level because it feels like you are listening to Padmé.
9. ’Battlefront II: Inferno Squad’ by Christie Golden
Narrated by: Janina Gavankar
Fans of the Battlefront games would love ‘Battlefront II: Inferno Squad’ because it gives life to the story of the original ‘Battlefront II’ video game released in 2017. So, if you don’t have a console or a system to play this game, then this audiobook should serve as a great alternative because it allows you to get to know more about the characters in a manner that the game doesn’t offer.
One of the things that we love about this audiobook is that Janina Gavankar gave life to Iden Versio, who has always been a crowd favorite among fans of the Star Wars games. Of course, ‘Inferno Squad’ is a prequel novel to the game, which means you’ll be able to learn more about the characters. And the audiobook makes a smooth transition from to the game.
8. ‘Thrawn Trilogy’ by Timothy Zahn
Narrated by: Marc Thompson
Arguably the most popular military commander in all of Star Wars, Grand Admiral Thrawn is the smartest and most cunning out of all of the different military strategists employed by Emperor Palpatine. And while we know that the 90s Thrawn books are no longer canon, Timothy Zahn was able to write a new ‘Thrawn Trilogy’ that is canon to the lore.
The new ‘Thrawn Trilogy’ focuses on how Thrawn found himself in the Empire’s employment and how he used his intelligence and military genius to impress the emperor and earn his place as one of the most competent people in the Empire. Of course, the trilogy covers different events, but they all allow us to see Thrawn’s magnificence as a character and his motivation for serving the emperor.
7. ‘Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi Leia, Princess of Alderaan’ by Claudia Grey
Narrated by: Saskia Maarleveld
After the death of Carrie Fisher, Claudia Grey was able to release a book that serves as a celebration of her most popular character, Princess Leia Organa. As such, this audiobook is a good way of telling the earlier part of Leia’s rise as a leader and how she became the brave hero she was during the period of the Rebellion.
‘Princess of Alderaan’ focuses more on the teenage years of Leia while she was living on Alderaan. As such, the audiobook also fleshes out the characters of Bail and Breha Organa while they are raising their adopted daughter to become strong. And we even get to see a bit of teenage romance and drama in this audiobook.
6. ‘Lando’s Luck’ by Justina Ireland
Narrated by: Soneela Nankani
If there’s one character that’s on par with Han Solo in terms of how popular they are despite being a scum of the universe, it’s Lando Calrissian. Introduced in ‘Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back,’ Lando quickly became popular because of his relationship with Han and his motivation as a former smuggler. Nevertheless, he became a hero for the Rebellion and quickly became very popular.
The story of ‘Lando’s Luck’ follows a younger Lando and his reliable droid, L3-37, while they are on smuggling adventures on the Millennium Falcon, which used to be his ship before it fell into the hands of Han Solo. In that regard, this should be a good young adult audiobook that younger fans should enjoy.
5. ‘Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter’ by Michael Reaves
Narrated by: Sam Witwer
While this audiobook isn’t canon, it still serves as a good story when it comes to the legendary Sith Lord named Darth Maul, who quickly became popular when he appeared in ‘Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace’ as the first Sith Lord that the Jedi encountered in years. In that regard, this book is a prequel to his story in ‘The Phantom Menace.
The best thing about this audiobook is that Sam Witwer narrated it. For those who may not know, Witwer was the same person who voiced Maul in ‘The Clone Wars’ and ‘Rebels’ as he quickly became a favorite among different fans for his masterful portrayal of the Sith Lord. And listening to this audiobook will make you feel like you are listening to Maul himself due to Witwer’s masterful narration.
4. ‘Dooku: Jedi Lost’ by Cavan Scott
Narrated by: Orlagh Cassidy, Euan Morton, Pete Bradbury, Jonathan Davis, Neil Hellegers, Sean Kenin, January LaVoy, Saskia Maarleveld, Carol Monda, Robert Petkoff, Rebecca Soler, Marc Thompson
Count Dooku has always been one of the most complex characters in Star Wars because fans believe that his motivations for wanting to destroy the Republic were right. But simultaneously, his methods were evil because he had to walk down the path of darkness to reach his goals. Nevertheless, ‘Dooku: Jedi Lost’ is a good audiobook that lets you understand what led to his fall to the dark side.
In ‘Jedi Lost,’ Dooku’s backstory is told before he goes to the dark side. This allows you to understand what happened to him in the past and what led him to try to destroy both the Republic and the Jedi. A part of this audiobook was even adapted into ‘Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi.’ And one of the best parts about this audiobook is that the narration was dramatically performed by everyone who poured their hearts out to make this story more compelling.
3. ‘Master and Apprentice’ by Claudia Grey
Narrated by: Jonathan Davis
The story of Obi-Wan Kenobi and his master, Qui-Gon Jinn, wasn’t explored much by the movies and shows. However, ‘Master and Apprentice’ allows us to understand what happened to them in the past before the events of ‘The Phantom Menace.’ And that means that Kenobi was still a young Padawan back then, while Qui-Gon was still trying to learn more about the Living Force.
‘Master and Apprentice’ is a great way for fans to learn more about this unlikely duo and how they came across the Prophecy of the Chosen One, which ultimately became one of Qui-Gon’s main goals in life. As such, this audiobook paints a good picture of the events that eventually led to ‘The Phantom Menace,’ and that’s why fans might want to try to listen to it.
2. ‘Star Wars: Myths and Fables’ by George Mann
Narrated by: James Monroe Iglehart
While not exactly one of the most essential storylines when it comes to understanding the greater lore and mythos of the Star Wars galaxy, ‘Myths and Fables’ is a good companion for fans that want to get to know the stories behind the stories and the different legends that ended up forming part of the Star Wars lore. In that regard, this short story collection should be able to keep different people entertained for hours.
What makes ‘Myths and Fables’ so fascinating is that the narration makes you feel like you are listening to fantasy stories instead of sci-fi. It is also scored by a harp-forward orchestration that adds to the overall drama of the audiobook. That’s why we recommend this one for fans. And it’s also a great family audiobook that everyone will love due to its informative content.
1. ‘From a Certain Point of View’ by Renée Ahdieh, Meg Cabot, Pierce Brown, Nnedi Okorafor, Sabaa Tahir
Narrated by: Jonathan Davis, Ashley Eckstein, Janina Gavankar, Jon Hamm, Neil Patrick Harris, January LaVoy, Saskia Maarleveld, Carol Monda, Daniel José Older, Marc Thompson
Finally, we have ‘From a Certain Point of View,’ an essential audiobook that fans should listen to to learn more about the other side of the Star Wars galaxy. But, of course, this audiobook tells a familiar story because it is set during the Rebellion. And we have a collection of 40 individual stories told from the points of view of different authors that all explore scenes from the original ‘A New Hope’ movie.
So, in that regard, the best thing about ‘From a Certain Point of View’ is that it gives you a different point of view of the stories that happened during ‘A New Hope.’ This includes stories about Greedo, the Cantina Band, and Beru Lars. So, while the short stories focus more on the “other guys,” seeing the movie’s events from a different perspective allows you to expand your Star Wars knowledge.
