Billy Magnussen Talks Booster Gold Fan-Casting: “There’s this weird red tape around it”

DCU has plenty of projects in development, just one of many is a TV series focusing on Booster Gold. We know nothing about the show at this point, only that it’s been announced. However, James Gunn recently said that just beacuse something was announced, doesn’t mean it’s going to get released.

A couple of months ago, credible sources started reporting that ‘Eternals’ actor Kumail Nanjiani has been cast in the role. Fans were disappointed since Nanjiani doesn’t physically fit with the role.

Especially in light of the fact that actors such as Antony Starr and Chris Pratt have been put as the favorites for the role by fans. Nanjiani has been often seen with James Gunn and the cast of ‘Superman’ at other events which further strengthened the speculations.

A few days ago James Gunn shared an image with all confirmed roles for the DCU so far, among them was Nanjiani as Booster Gold. Gunn was asked whether this was a confirmation that Nanjiani had been cast and the director said “no.”

We currently don’t know where we stand with Booster Gold, however, one popular fan cast recently commented on the fact that he is fan-cast in the role often, giving fans disappointing news.

We’re talking about Billy Magnussen. Magnussen is best known for his roles as Prince Anders in Disney’s ‘Aladdin’ (2019) and as A.C. in ‘The Many Saints of Newark’ (2021), showcasing his range in both musical and dramatic performances. He has also appeared in popular films and series like ‘Game Night,’ ‘Into the Woods’, and ‘Sorry for Your Loss.’

Magnussen is currently in HBO’s ‘The Franchise’ and is currently promoting the show. He recently talked on The Kristina Harloff Show and was asked about Booster Gold Role. Seeing that he is now a part of HBO which is owned by Warner Bros. The actor revealed something surprising:

Yeah. That’s funny. I’ve been aware of Booster, probably at the beginning of the whole superhero movement. I’m trying to make a push.

He was then asked whether he was trying to make the push right now. Magnussen admitted that he is currently not pushing for the role, as he is not really connected to that world.

I’m not in that world. There’s this weird red tape around it to get into it. It’s really weird. I don’t know. I’ve just never been able to crack that nut with it.

The actor also admitted that he never had conversations with James Gunn regarding the role, and he isn’t sure that Gunn is aware he exists.

I don’t even know if [Gunn] knows I exist so… […] I think there’s been an opportunity when I was younger. That was like, again, if you get a chance to put on a cape, I think you should be specific about it. You only get one really. Unless you’re like Chris Evans. How do they keep repeating them? Even Doom and stuff like that.

Magnussen ended the interview with comments about Hollywood being a specific tight-knit place and the moral of the story is, once you’re in you’re in, if you’re out – it’s difficult to get in.
