Brad Winderbaum Confirms They Can’t Use Tom Holland in a Live-Action Series on Disney+ Because of Sony

Brad Winderbaum, a big Marvel Studios executive, recently confirmed that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man will not be showing up in any live-action Disney+ series within the MCU.
The reason behind this is simple. Sony holds the rights to the character for long-form television, meaning any live-action Spider-Man series on Disney+ is off the table. However, there is some flexibility. Marvel Studios can still feature Spider-Man in animated shows, but it has to be kept at 30-minute episodes.
This confirmation came during an interview (see below), where Winderbaum gave fans some clarity on the situation: “[Sony has] the long-form television rights, we can do 30 minute animation.”
While many had hoped to see Spider-Man in future MCU live-action series, it turns out that Sony’s control over the television rights limits Marvel’s ability to make those plans a reality.
Although Spider-Man can’t appear in those shows, we could still see him in future animated projects from Marvel Studios. But as far as live-action goes, it looks like we’ll need to wait for more big screen appearances of Holland’s version of the character.
So, while it’s disappointing for those hoping to see Spider-Man alongside the MCU heroes in TV series, it’s not all bad news. Fans can still look forward to animated Spider-Man content in the MCU. Just don’t expect to see him swinging into live-action anytime soon.
