‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Director Comments on Harrison Ford’s Red Hulk & Its Impact on the MCU
With less than a month to go until the release of ‘Captain America: Brave New World,’ excitement is building. This film marks Anthony Mackie’s first solo outing as Captain America, and it also introduces Harrison Ford to the MCU as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, who will transform into Red Hulk over the course of the movie.
Red Hulk is a formidable force and one of the most notable Hulk villains, so fans were taken aback when it was confirmed that he would be facing off against Sam Wilson in this highly anticipated installment.
In an interview for Fandango’s Big Ticket series, director Julius Onah discussed the role of Red Hulk in ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ and how it ties into the movie’s themes. Onah shared his excitement, saying he felt like a kid when the idea of including Red Hulk became a possibility.
He knew it was the perfect time to introduce the character. Onah also expressed his enthusiasm for casting Harrison Ford highlighting how Ford’s scenes with Anthony Mackie would enhance the film.
Onah explained that the Hulk, especially a rage-filled version, resonates deeply with audiences because it represents raw emotion. In ‘Captain America: Brave New World,’ this anger ties into the film’s central conflict and themes.
He shared that his excitement isn’t just about the character’s appeal, but also about how the Hulk’s story serves the movie’s deeper message.
The Hulk character is such an expression of pure id, but there’s something about, especially a rage Hulk, that is so relatable and exciting for an audience, but there’s also a real thematic core when it comes to the expression of that anger in this film, and what it means about the conflict at the center of this film.
it’s not just like the inner kid in [him] that’s excited about it, but the director or the storyteller in [him] is also excited about where this goes, and thematically what this film has to say.
Onah believes the message of ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ adds to the excitement of the film. He teased that, alongside the work of Mackie and Ramirez, the movie will be a real treat for audiences.
