‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Director Hints at Adamantium’s Role in Wolverine’s & MCU Future

It’s been several months since it was revealed that Captain America: Brave New World will center around adamantium. This rare metal will be extracted from the body of the Dead Celestial, revisiting a storyline first introduced in Eternals.

Since this revelation, fans have speculated whether adamantium will play a role in Project X and Wolverine’s future in the MCU. We already know that a variant of Wolverine exists in the MCU, with Hugh Jackman establishing the role in Deadpool & Wolverine. However, the origin of his claws has yet to be explored, leaving plenty of room for the MCU to take creative liberties with his backstory.

We also know that several world superpowers will try to gain control of the metal, for their own sinister goals.

In a newly released TV spot for Captain America: Brave New World, President Thunderbolt Ross refers to the discovery of adamantium as the “discovery of the millennium.” This rare and powerful metal sparks a global crisis, with various nations vying for control over it.

Director Julius Onah confirmed that adamantium will in fact be connected to Wolverine. In a recent interview, Onah revealed that adamantium will play a role in Project X, the infamous government program responsible for Wolverine’s creation. He also likened the global scramble for adamantium to the impact of Vibranium in the MCU, hinting at its significance in future storylines.

Julius Onah emphasized that adamantium is fundamentally different from vibranium—it’s far more durable but lacks vibranium’s ability to absorb kinetic energy. He confirmed that adamantium will play a key role in Project X and Wolverine’s story. Unlike vibranium, which is controlled by Wakanda, adamantium is up for grabs, making it a highly contested resource that sparks global conflict in the upcoming movie.

Adamantium is much more durable. Adamantium is not like Vibranium, which can absorb kinetic energy. Adamantium, as we know, will eventually be a part of Project X. It will eventually be a part the story of Wolverine. So Adamantium now becomes this resource that could change the world in a way that’s very different because Vibranium is something that is really under the purview of the Wakandans. This is why it becomes an amazing geopolitical football in our film.

Onah also highlighted the MCU’s ability to reimagine iconic comic book elements in fresh and exciting ways. Since mutants and adamantium haven’t existed in the MCU until now, their introduction offers a surprising new take for audiences.

But also what’s so great about the MCU is it’s an opportunity to take things that are iconic from publishing and find a way to reimagine them for this universe in a way that could be really exciting. And because we haven’t had mutants in the past, because we haven’t had Adamantium, it became such a fun way to surprise audiences with a new sort of vision of what it could be. And I’m just still pinching myself that I get to have the movie that introduces Red Hulk, that introduces Aamantium, that introduces Serpent Society. It is fun for me as a geek, and I think it’s going to be a blast for all audiences when they go see this movie.
