A few days remain until the release of ‘Captain America: Brave New World.’ The film marks Anthony Mackie’s first solo outing as Captain America, where he will face off against Red Hulk and lay the groundwork for leading the next generation of Avengers in the MCU.
However, the movie’s development and marketing have been clouded by controversy. Even before the promotional campaign began, rumors swirled about poor test screenings and an inflated budget—reportedly increasing by $100 million due to extensive reshoots. Additionally, the inclusion of Sabra, a Jewish superhero with ties to Mossad, sparked backlash, with some fans threatening to boycott the film given the current political climate.
The latest controversy stems from Mackie himself, as the actor recently stated that, in his view, Captain America should not represent the term “America.”
Mackie stated he sees Captain America as a symbol of honor, integrity, and keeping one’s word, rather than being tied to the term “America.” And Mackie is correct, one notable version of Captain America called Nomad was completely disillusioned with the U.S. government. Steve abandoned the Captain America identity after discovering corruption within its ranks but kept the honor, dignity, and integrity.
Captain America represents a lot of different things & I don’t think the term ‘America’ should be one of those representations. It’s about a man who keeps his word, who has honor, dignity and integrity.
There’s nothing wrong with Mackie’s quote as long as you don’t get too literal with it, Mackie never intended to sever the ties between Captain America and the nation itself.
Now Julius Onah, the director behind the upcoming movie addressed the quote. Onah responded to Mackie’s remarks by suggesting that they may have been misinterpreted. He explained that his approach to ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ was centered on highlighting themes of community and empathy—values he has personally experienced while living in the U.S.
He emphasized that Sam Wilson’s defining strength is his empathy, which he sees as a crucial and timely characteristic of the character. Essentially, Onah framed Captain America not just as a symbol of one nation but as a hero whose qualities—honor, integrity, and compassion—resonate universally.
Things at times get misinterpreted. Speaking for myself, I approached this film with a very specific point of view. The sense of community, which is something I personally have experienced in various ways while living in the US. Another thing that stuck out was the idea of empathy, which in my opinion is Sam Wilson’s superpower. That to me is not just timely but incredibly important.
Julius Onah is Nigerian-American. He was born in Nigeria and later moved to the United States with his family when he was 11 years old. His story is one of success and his pleasant experience hopefully inspired the movie to reflect the universal qualities of Captain America.
