‘Captain America: Brave New World’ is one of the most exciting upcoming MCU projects – in theory. The movie is Sam Wilson’s first standalone movie as Captain America, and it pits him against Thaddeus Ross’ Red Hulk, played by Harrison Ford.

The movie’s development and marketing have been fraught with controversies, reshoots, and poor test screenings, and it seems that this trend isn’t stopping anytime soon, as the movie allegedly had yet another test screening that prompted changes in the movie.

This report comes from Daniel Richtman, a notable industry insider and he published this information via his paid subscription on X.

The movie has a long history of poor test screenings, and recently even the plot of the movie was leaked in its entirety online, which prompted a lot of negative reactions. The reasons for negative feedback this time were not elaborated in great detail, but it seems that history is repeating itself. But, let’s start at the beginning.

Remember those massive reshoots that the movie had over the summer? Those reshoots reportedly added $100M to the movie’s budget and were the answer to the original test screenings.

The test audiences complained that the overall political message of the movie was boring and uninspiring. The action wasn’t as satisfactory as in previous ‘Captain America’ installment, and Mackie’s chemistry with his romantic co-lead apparently fell flat.

Some additional reports claimed that the reshoots were so costly since the team behind the movie decided to add some references to the ‘World War Hulk’ storyline.

Then there’s the whole thing with Sabra/Ruth. The controversy surrounding Sabra, a Jewish superhero with a background in Mossad, began when her role in the movie was first announced. Tensions escalated after reports of extensive reshoots, as fans learned that Sabra remained in the film despite the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, fueling further debate.

Then, Sabra’s appearance in the ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ trailer angered many fans, with some threatening to boycott the movie. Fans hoped her origin would be altered, as her MCU description mentions her as a former Black Widow and confidante to President Thaddeus Ross, with no reference to her Israeli background or Mossad ties.

This led to accusations that Marvel was erasing her Israeli origins. According to some insiders Marvel studios really did bow down to the pressure and decided to erase all the references to her military/espionage background.

A couple of weeks ago, yet another test screening was held. The studio apparently added Amadeus Cho played by Logan Kim to the movie. This is the point at which the entire plot got leaked online and which prompted yet another wave of negative feedback.

Two different cuts of the film test screened last week, and plot details for one of the cuts have leaked online. The person who attended didn’t seem to like the movie all that much.

Based on the folks I’ve spoken to, those who attended were either given a red or green bracelet and were split up into two different theaters. The reactions I’ve heard have not been very kind to this movie, which is being described as “inessential” and “flat.

Of course, this information is not officially confirmed as no studio will ever tell you that their movie is in massive trouble just a few months before release but I guess we will get our confirmation (or debunk) once the movie releases worldwide on February 14th, 2025.
