Carnage, Hulk, Wolverine, Namor, Clea, Black Widow and The Winter Soldier Are Joining the Team in ‘New Thunderbolts*’

Marvel fans, get ready—a brand-new Thunderbolts series is hitting shelves in June 2025. Titled New Thunderbolts*, this ongoing comic comes from writer Sam Humphries and artist Ton Lima. It’s a fresh take on the Thunderbolts, a team known for bringing together some of Marvel’s toughest and most unpredictable characters. This time, the lineup is wilder than ever, and the stakes are sky-high.

The story starts with Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier, and Black Widow uncovering a serious danger to the Marvel Universe. They pull together a crew of heavy hitters who aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty. This isn’t your typical hero squad. The team includes Carnage, Hulk, Namor, Clea, and Wolverine—some of the most dangerous and independent characters around. They’re not exactly known for playing nice, but Bucky and Natasha are betting they can make it work.

What’s the threat? Fake versions of the Illuminati, a powerful group in the Marvel world, are causing chaos. These duplicates are just as smart and strong as the real deal. To stop them, the New Thunderbolts have to take risks no other team would dare. But managing a group of killers and wildcards like this could be as risky as the mission itself.

I love every iteration of Thunderbolts,” said Humphries. “I‘m thrilled to continue the franchise’s proud tradition of hard hitting action, powder keg personalities, and explosive surprises into a new era. This is a gang of seven of the biggest badasses and loose cannons from different corners of the Marvel Universe. Assembling a super team is like inviting the right combination of guests to a dinner party. So I imagined a dangerous, disastrous, unhinged Marvel dinner party, and went with that.”

The action kicks off fast. This team doesn’t waste time talking—they dive straight into the fight. Artist Ton Lima is bringing that energy to life with bold, dynamic artwork. “I’m having a blast working on this book with Mr. Humphries and the team,” Lima shared. “Look at this lineup… it’s crazy. They’re not here to talk; they jump straight to the action! And that’s the most fun part to draw. None of them are known for taking it easy on the job, so I can’t either.”

Humphries praised Lima’s work, saying, “Ton is stepping up to the plate with blockbuster artwork that really does justice to the big characters on the team.”

The series launches just before the Thunderbolts* movie hits theaters on May 2, 2025. The comic’s main cover is by Stephen Segovia, with a variant by Mark Bagley. In the months ahead, Marvel will reveal more about the creepy threat tying this team together: the Killuminati. Keep an eye out for updates!
