“Turns out being handsome isn’t enough”: Is Cavill’s Star Power Under Question Following a String of Bad Projects?

For most of our readers, Herny Cavill is known as the man who portrayed Superman between 2013 and 2022 (2023 if you count uncredited cameo in ‘The Flash’). The actor has a lot of fans and we’re regularly reporting on his ventures, as his name still holds gravity in the industry.

But it seems that his star power seems to be somewhat fading in recent times, and everything started with his role in DCEU.

As you’re probably aware Cavill’s career as Superman went down in infamy as fans liked his portrayal but hated the dark twist that Snyder has put on the character overall. All projects that involved Cavill as Superman received mixed reviews at best. In 2022 he was teased to be back as Superman in the post-credits scenes of ‘Black Adam,’ but following Dwayne The Rock Johnson’s failed “alleged” takeover of DC Studios, Cavill was fired as Superman. This happened after he was told by the studio to spread to word to his fans that he would in fact return as Clark Kent. A few weeks after he announced that he would be back as Superman, Cavill announced that the projects would be moving without him since Gunn had a younger Superman in mind.

To make matters worse Cavill gave up the production of Netflix’s ‘The Witcher,’ to focus on Superman. Cavill portrayed the main character Geralt of Rivia in three seasons of the show. The project was also panned by pretty much everyone, with not a lot of redeemable things about it. Again fans liked Cavill’s portrayal of Geralt but hated the way the show was adapted in the first place.

Cavill was ultimately replaced as the titular character for the fourth upcoming season by Liam Hemsworth.

Cavill starred in two movies this year, two spy-action comedies, ‘Argylle’ and ‘The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare’ both movies received mixed reviews at best and both have lost significant money for the studios. Cavill’s most exciting upcoming project is definitely his adaptation of the popular board game series ‘Warhammer 40K’ – but this project seems to be in trouble as well.

The deadline to finalize creative guidelines for the project is December 2024, with Games Workshop stating that it will only move forward if both they and Amazon agree on these guidelines. As of August, there are no updates, leading to concerns among fans that the project might be canceled, which could significantly impact Cavill’s career.

Now as you can see it seems that Cavill is no longer enough to draw audiences to theaters, and it’s not due to his lack of acting skills, but it seems that the actor has trouble picking projects that will ensure the longevity of his career.
