Channing Tatum’s Gambit Comic Origin Story Lays the Groundwork for His MCU Solo Movie

With the release of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ the wider MCU has gotten access to plenty of characters from alternative Marvel universes, such as ‘Blade’ universe, Fox X-Men universe, and even Daredevil’s and Elektra’s universe from the original movies.

While most of the cameos we’ve seen in the movie were actors already established in the role, the movie also presented Gambit played by Channing Tatum, which is currently not associated with any universe.

The actor’s story with the character is nearly 2 decades long and goes back to ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ released in 2006.

He auditioned for the role but was ultimately cut from the movie, the opportunity presented itself for him to “reprise” his role in ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ in 2009 but he was unavailable and the role went to Taylor Kitsch instead.

Now fans are calling for Gambit to have his own solo movie, but due to lack of information about the variant, something that ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ addressed it would be hard to incorporate him in the MCU.

This is why Screen Rant posted an interesting theory that claims that Gambit’s comic origin already lays the groundwork for his solo movie.

The theory suggests that Gambit’s origin sets up his solo movie based on connections between his past and recent developments in the MCU. In ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ Gambit’s reference to his nickname, “Le Diable Blanc” (The White Devil), and his comment about being born in the Void, hint at a deeper backstory tied to his comic book origins. This nickname, which predates his time with the X-Men, alludes to his early life in New Orleans and his involvement with the Thieves Guild.

The theory posits that the TVA’s possible erasure of Gambit’s memory could explain why he retains connections to his past, despite his confusion about it. This sets up an interesting story for a solo film that explores his origins and identity more deeply. Given that Gambit’s solo movie was scrapped after Disney’s acquisition of Fox, this angle offers a way to revisit and potentially realize that project while integrating it into the broader MCU.

The actor claims that he has already discussed the movie with Iger and Feige, but as he put it “it’s in god’s hands now.”
