Ranker is a popular platform where users can rank virtually anything according to their preferences, independent of official affiliations with the projects in question. Recently, Ranker conducted a comprehensive survey to determine the greatest Superman villains of all time. With nearly 100 villains listed, we’ve narrowed it down to the top ten for a more focused overview.

In this report, we’ll present the top 10 villains from the survey, ranked from 10th to 1st place, with the top spot being the ultimate favorite. Along with the rankings, we’ll include our own comments and insights to enrich the discussion. Enjoy the list!

10. Mister Mxyzptlk

Honestly, choosing Mister Mxyzptlk is a somewhat unusual decision. While he is undeniably powerful, his role in DC’s stories is quite ambiguous. He oscillates between being a villain, an antihero, and even an ally to the heroes, depending on the storyline. Although we don’t entirely disagree with this selection, it certainly strikes us as an unconventional choice.

9. Mongul

Mongul is a villain we anticipated being on this list. Although he’s not a mainstream Superman foe, he has a longstanding presence and has consistently posed significant challenges for the Man of Steel. Given his history and impact, we’re on board with this inclusion and fully support his ranking.

8. Parasite

DC Parasite

Parasite, though not a mainstream villain, boasts a solid background and a history that makes him a formidable adversary. His powers can create significant challenges, even for a superhero like Superman, who finds dealing with this villain particularly troublesome. Given his impact, we agree with his inclusion and ranking on the list.

7. Metallo

Metallo

Metallo, the first of two Superman “variants” on this list, is a particularly intriguing villain. His ability to overcome his own limitations and become a serious threat to Superman, rather than just being a mindless robot, makes him stand out. This complexity contributes to his notoriety as a villain. Considering the competition, we agree with both his inclusion and his ranking on the list.

6. Bizarro

Bizarro

Bizarro, the second Superman “variant” on this list, might initially seem like an overpowered, mindless zombie. However, similar to Metallo, Bizarro has evolved over the years, overcoming his initial lack of depth to develop a compelling and often tragic backstory. This evolution has led us to appreciate him more than simply despise him.

5. General Zod

General Zod

General Zod, famously known as Superman’s first major adversary in each film series, narrowly avoided Krypton’s destruction by being imprisoned in the Phantom Zone. After escaping with his followers, he sought to conquer Superman and turn Earth into their new home. Despite Superman’s efforts to thwart him, General Zod remains a villain with considerable depth and menace, earning his rightful place on this list.

4. Doomsday

Doomsday

Doomsday may be a mindless monster, but he’s notorious for having killed Superman in the famous comic book storyline. Nearly indestructible and growing stronger with each death, Doomsday represents a persistent threat that’s almost impossible to eliminate entirely. The best approach is to relocate him rather than attempt to destroy him. Given his menacing presence and immense power, we fully agree with his inclusion on this list.

3. Darkseid

Darkseid is often recognized as a major foe of the Justice League as a whole, but he has also had memorable individual confrontations with Superman. As DC’s most formidable villain, his immense intelligence and power make him virtually impossible to defeat. While he might top a list of Justice League villains, securing third place on this list is more than appropriate.

2. Brainiac

Brainiac

It’s no surprise that Brainiac made the list. While he may not be Superman’s ultimate nemesis, he remains one of his most dangerous and enduring adversaries. Brainiac is a fascinating character in his own right, with significant depth and complexity as a villain, which is why fans hold him in such high regard. We fully agree with both his inclusion and his ranking on this list.

1. Lex Luthor

Lex Luthor

It’s no surprise that Lex Luthor claimed the top spot. As a human who has consistently pushed his own limits, he poses a significant threat to the Kryptonian superhero. Lex Luthor stands out as one of DC’s greatest villains—an intelligent, power-hungry megalomaniac whom we love to hate. This is precisely why he deserves the number one position.
