China’s ‘Ne Zha 2’ Shatters Records, Surpasses ‘Infinity War’ at Global Box Office!

China’s Ne Zha 2 has been making history at the global box office. Released during the Chinese New Year holiday, the animated sequel has broken multiple records, including the biggest opening weekend ever for an animated movie.
In just over a month, Ne Zha 2 has reached an incredible milestone, surpassing $2 billion in worldwide earnings. The majority of its revenue has come from China, where it is now the country’s highest-grossing movie of all time by more than $1 billion.
This weekend, Ne Zha 2 officially passed Avengers: Infinity War, which made $2.04 billion globally, making it the sixth-biggest movie ever. It is expected to soon overtake Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($2.05 billion), securing its place among the top five highest-grossing films in history. Once its run is complete, Ne Zha 2 will stand alongside legendary hits like Titanic, Avatar, Avengers: Endgame, and Avatar: The Way of Water.
Not only is Ne Zha 2 the biggest movie of 2025, but it has also become the highest-grossing animated film ever, beating Pixar’s Inside Out 2, which earned $1.7 billion earlier this year. What makes this achievement even more impressive is that Ne Zha 2 was made on a much smaller budget—just $80 million, compared to Inside Out 2’s reported $200 million cost.
In recent years, many studios have been reducing budgets for animated films, keeping them under $100 million. Other recent hits like Despicable Me 4, Minions, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie have all followed this trend.
The success of Ne Zha 2 highlights a big change in the global film industry. In the past, Hollywood movies dominated the Chinese market, but in recent years, China has become more self-sufficient in producing blockbuster hits.
While some Hollywood movies like Venom: The Last Dance and Jurassic World Dominion have done well in China, many American films now struggle to attract large audiences there. This shift has opened the door for local films like Ne Zha 2 to thrive.
Audiences in China have embraced the movie, giving it an impressive 99% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. As Ne Zha 2 continues its record-breaking run, it proves that Chinese cinema is stronger than ever.
