‘Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’ Live-Action Film in the Works Before the Game Even Launches
A live-action film adaptation of “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33” is already in development, even though the game itself has yet to be released. Sandfall Interactive, the game’s developer, is partnering with Story Kitchen to bring the project to life. The game, set to launch on April 24, will be available on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC via Steam and Epic Games.
“Clair Obscur: Expedition 33” takes place in a world inspired by Belle Époque France. The story follows the Paintress, a powerful being who paints a cursed number on her monolith each year. Anyone of that age disappears, and with each passing year, the number decreases, pushing humanity toward extinction.
Players will follow Expedition 33 as they embark on a mission to stop this cycle before the Paintress paints another deadly number.
Story Kitchen founders Dmitri M. Johnson and Mike Goldberg are excited about the collaboration. “The game’s compelling narrative and complex characters provide a solid foundation for a cinematic experience that will resonate with both gamers and moviegoers alike,” they shared. Casting and directorial choices are currently being made, with Johnson, Goldberg, Timothy I. Stevenson, and Elena Sandoval producing the film for Story Kitchen.
Sandfall Interactive’s CEO and creative director, Guillaume Broche, sees this partnership as an opportunity to expand the game’s world beyond video games. “Their expertise in storytelling and passion for our vision make them the perfect team to translate our game into a captivating film,” he said.
Story Kitchen is no stranger to adapting video games for the screen. They are already working on multiple projects, including a “Tomb Raider” series for Netflix and a live-action adaptation at Amazon MGM Studios. Other projects in the pipeline include “Just Cause” for Universal, “Streets of Rage” for Lionsgate, and “Toejam & Earl” for Amazon.
While details about the “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33” film remain scarce, its video game counterpart has already drawn plenty of attention. It was featured in Xbox Developer Direct and landed on DualShockers’ list of the most anticipated indie games of 2025. It also appeared on the covers of “PC Gamer” and “Edge Magazine.”
The game’s voice cast is packed with talent, including Andy Serkis and Charlie Cox, alongside rising star Ben Starr from “Final Fantasy XVI.” Other notable actors include Shala Nyx (“Cyberpunk 2077,” “The Old Guard”), Jennifer English (Shadowheart in “Baldur’s Gate 3”), and Kirsty Rider (“The Sandman”). Rich Keeble (“Good Omens”), Devora Wilde (Lae’zel in “Baldur’s Gate 3”), Tracy Wiles (“Baldur’s Gate 3”), and Maxence Cazorla (“Ineffable”) are also part of the lineup, though their roles are yet to be revealed.
With a strong story and a talented team behind both the game and its adaptation, this could be a film to watch. What do you think about video games getting movie adaptations before they even launch? Share your thoughts in the comments!
